Tomorrow starts the beginning of exam week, which means my freshman year of college will be coming to a close and I can honestly say I’m both happy and sad. This year has come with so many challenges but has also included some good times.
We breathe in as the night around us exhales
The tears hit me around 10:00 pm. My world was falling apart, and I could barely stand, let alone see straight. Suddenly my plans for the future were skyrocketing out of control and I was hit with a dilemma. I had to make a choice. A choice that would affect my future as well as the possibility of having a family in the future.
Everybody has a first heartbreak. Most people experience this in high school or their first year of college. Mine was no different than that.
The waitress took our plates away from us as we sat and talked to one another in the restaurant. It was a small restaurant with dim lighting. An older couple was sitting at the table next to us smiling. Once the waitress was gone, he placed his hand inside his jacket pocket and removed a small box. I smiled from ear to ear, already knowing what it was. He placed the small box in front me saying, “I really don’t know why I’m so nervous about this because I’m not actually proposing to you yet.” For a few minutes, he talked about how much he loved me, how this was our promise to one another that we would stay faithful to each other, and someday marry one another. After that he had me open the box and he placed the ring on my finger. I stared at it smiling. It was a promise ring. A ring that represents a relationship that isn’t quite ready or in our case “too young” for marriage.
My shoe obsession started when I was 16 and directly coincided with my boy obsession. It all started with my first boyfriend Joshua. He told me that he was no good and had a dark heart and I chose to ignore this... at first. When our relationship started, it was fine. We did typical things teenage couples did like going to the movies and out to the mall. The movies usually consisted of blood and gore or zombies, but I didn’t mind because he had captured my heart and I liked seeing him happy and excited about something for a change... even if that was blood and gore or zombies. Usually, on our outings, we would end up just hanging around the food court, but this day was different. I had been given money and instructed by my mother to buy myself a new pair of shoes because the old sneakers I had were old and trashy.
