Much of the conflict between the church and the queer community could settle if we spoke the same language; it would allow space for understanding even if disagreement continues. However, many people on opposite sides of the queer morality debate often use the same words with different definitions. Sometimes, they’re completely unaware of another person’s vocabulary. In many ways, the church and the queer community don’t speak the same language.
I first heard of the crime against Ahmaud Arbery through Instagram. I have a few friends of color who are heavily involved in social justice efforts, and they posted him on their stories. I saw his name appear several more times on social media since Tuesday, May 5th—the day a video of his murder was released—but he only began to appear in the posts of my white friends two days later.
I hit a low this semester. I couldn’t stay awake for more than 4 hours. I had no appetite. I was probably going to fail some classes. Existing was a chore. Waking up was a burden.
