The Dead of Night
It had to have been about 3 or 4 hours before we stumbled upon the cabin, but at least it was early morning now. The sun started to appear over the horizon, and the birds began to sing. I was so tired I could barely stand, not to mention, my ankle was still very sore. The woman helped me sit down on the front steps. "Stay here", she said sternly, "once it's clear, I'll help you inside". I sat there quietly for a moment, “wait, what? What do you mean ‘clear out’?”, I questioned as I turned towards the cabin door. Fear and worried thoughts flooded my mind. I tried to shake the thought of something happening to Kyle and Lily, maybe they were just hiding… hopefully. The woman came out to the front porch minutes later with blood dripping off her sword, “it’s safe now”, she stated slightly out of breath. Chris stepped out onto the porch shortly after her, “those kids you told us about… they aren’t here. I don’t think they ever were…”, he said as he looked the woman in the eyes with concern. “What do you mean they were never here? I just saw them yesterday… they have to be here. We have to keep looking.”, I proclaimed anxiously. The woman sighed, “you stay here and keep an eye on her while I go help your father clear out the walkers. We’ll stay here for the night and head back to camp in the morning, okay?”, she stated to Chris with confidence, he nodded, then she stepped back into the cabin.

The Dead of Night
I walked around for a bit trying to find some sort of sign to which way they could have possibly went. There were footprints everywhere in every direction. I sighed and thought to myself, “there has got to be something, somewhere”. Moments later, there was rustling coming from the bushes about eight feet from where I was standing. I quickly tucked myself behind the trunk of a tree. There was that uneasy, familiar feeling of something watching your every move, and it was just on the other side of that tree. I was too scared to peek just in case that might be the last thing I do. "You can do this... he could be looking for you", I whispered to myself as I took a deep breath. I tried building up the courage to see what it was, but my anxiety was way too high. The slow shuffling footsteps got closer, as leaves and twigs crunched underfoot. My heart was in my throat, it was getting hard to swallow. Finally, after a brief moment, I decided that it is either now or never. I grabbed the only thing I could find at the base of the tree and took another deep breath. With a rock in hand, I raised my arm and stepped out from behind the tree trunk. I instantly froze. stunned with what was standing in front of me. It was a lonely deer that was passing by. I slowly lowered my arm, hoping I would not scare it off. It stared at me so intensively and ready to bolt back into the bushes. Maybe it was trying to figure out if I was going to try and eat him like the rest of the 'humans' it came across. Taking one steady step to the side, my foot slipped off a root that was sticking out of the ground. The deer got spooked and took off farther into the woods. With a sigh of relief, I dropped the rock and continued to search the area for any clues on where or better yet, what happened to Damien and the rest of them. About an hour or so later, the heat from the sun was extraordinarily unbearable. I walked as far as I could until I felt a little dizzy from heat exhaustion. I had to stop and rest.

The Dead of Night
I was having a decent dream, considering, until I felt something kick into my shoe. “Wake up!” a voice angrily demanded. I always hated getting woken up as a kid, especially for school. My vision started to fade in. There were six people with masks standing around me with different looking weapons in their hands. "Well now... What do we have here?" the stranger questioned with a devilish smile. I jolted backwards into a fetal position, still sitting in the dirt. I swear I recognized that voice from somewhere, "what do you want...?" I nervously replied. “Oh nothing, just thought I would check in and see how you’re doing these days” he said as he grinned at me “you know, since all the bullshit that went down a few years ago”. I look over to see where Damien was, but he was not there. I looked back at the man staring at me and asked furiously, "what did you do with him?" The stranger answered as he took the mask off, "oh nothing... just something I should have done a long time ago". Horrible thoughts filled my head as a sense of panic and anxiety started taking over my body. I never thought I would ever see my ex, Tyson, again.

The Dead of Night
Everything, and everyone we knew was gone, or so we thought. The sound of gun fire, and sirens in the distance, along with horrifying screams filled the streets. Damien placed his hands on both of my shoulders, looked me straight in the eyes, "just keep your eyes on me, do not let go... do not look around... don't do anything but run. Okay? I will keep you safe" he said reassuringly. Still in shock from everything that has already happened, all I could do was nod as I tried pulling myself together. My legs felt like rubber, my arms were tingling, and my head was spinning. “How did this happen? What is going on?!” I thought to myself.

The Dead of Night
As I crept down the old, wooden staircase, the groaning and moaning got louder. With each step I took, the smell got worse and worse. I could hardly breathe, the hair on the back of my neck was standing straight up on end, and my heart was racing faster than it ever had before. The anticipation was killing me. I finally reached the bottom of the stairs; it was so dark down there you could not see a hand in front of your face. I coughed and gagged from the horrific stench, “Mrs. Vanelli? Are you down here?” I called out anxiously. There was the sound of feet shuffling across the floor, it sounded like it was getting closer. I shined the flashlight around the basement, “Hello?” I asked nervously. Looking around that dark, creepy, cobweb filled basement, it started to worry me even more on what could possibly be down there.

The Dead of Night
“Has anyone ever really thought about what career they wanted as a kid? I did. I wanted to be a veterinarian, a doctor of some kind. Sadly though, bad things happened in my life... I got into some trouble and dropped out of school. Eventually, I was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety that stemmed all the way back to my childhood. My parents never believed me when I told them I tried my best to deal with my issues, so I quickly became the black sheep of the family. Everything went south for a while, making me think nothing good would come of anything I did. Until I met him. He made me believe. He made me realize I can do anything I wanted to if I put my mind to it. He saved me. We would do everything together, go everywhere together. We were inseparable. He believed in me when nobody else did, not even myself. No matter what it was, he was always there for me every step of the way. Do you have someone in your life like that?”
