It was midday when Evelyn stepped out of the elevator and into the artificial night of her apartment hallway. As the uneven fluorescent lights flickered to life, she made a mental review of the morning. There had been a call-out placed on an unassuming house in the middle of the suburbs, one of many nestled in a picturesque cul-de-sac. According to the case file that had been emailed to her last night, Amazon’s predicative analytics had shown that at approximately 10am this morning, the man who lived in this house would place an order for an excessive amount of Tylenol.

The Cruel Prince
Wise men will tell you not to listen to legends, or heed the words of strangers whispered so low they hang on frosty air. But travel across the border from England to Wales along the Northern coast, past Connah’s Quay and Bagillt into the forests of twisted trees surrounding Gwaenysgor and the most cautious traveller could not evade the tale of the Cruel Prince of Dolwyddelan. Even if they were to avoid the roads and shun the company of men, some say that on misty nights the wind blows through the reeds and the reeds sing of his follies and of his fate.

Should Latin Be Taught in VCE?
Introduction: On the 31st of May 2021, I returned to Haileybury College, from which I had graduated four years prior, as a member of staff. I was now the new Latin Teaching Assistant and virtually scurrying from break-out room to break-out room to introduce myself. After the basic niceties had been exchanged, I asked each group of students what I considered to be a fairly important question: Why Latin? One of the most time-intensive subjects on the VCE roster, I assumed that no sane student would take up the subject without a good reason. And, without exception, I received some variation on the same theme: ‘Because it scales well’, with the optional addition of: ‘and I need a good ATAR to get into med’.
