I’m 5 years old and wearing my favorite pink rain boots. I’m running too fast on our family farm. I trip and fall and scrape both my knees.

Equine Spirit
In many ways I was raised by animals. Not wolves or bears, and not a metaphor for horrific parenting. No, my parents were quite wonderful, for most of the years. I was raised by the constant presence of creatures I was not worthy of befriending or worthy of receiving their affection. Animals have a unique gift for forgiving people of their worst behaviors and accepting them in an absolute and necessary time of need. They simply save lives by existing. When my heart beats I can sometimes feel an echo of a thousand little footprints.

These Rescued Paws
Rescue animals have always been a part of our family. Every single one of our dogs were from a shelter. Our cats were either strays my sister and I brought home, or also products of neglect, having found their furever home with us. We even acquired a senile horse to live out the rest of his days on the lush ten acres that made up my childhood home. And when my parents decided to downsize and relocate to a six-acre farm, they suddenly found themselves with a donkey and a miniature horse, and yes, both were rescues.

Goal Setter. Goal Getter.
2020, you’re dead to me. And yes, it’s personal. For the past five or so years, I’ve been an avid goal setter and goal getter. I love that feeling of crossing out a goal, knowing I completed it and giving myself that sense of “wow, you are a productive member of society.” Last year was no different. I was going to save money, travel more, find a great job, and get in the best shape of my life because damn it, I was turning thirty. Ha. Yeah. I didn’t achieve any of that. And I know I’m not alone. The worst year ever really maintained the consistency of spoiled milk that no one wanted to deal with, so they just left it in the fridge.
