An Unexpected Gift
It started out as any other day had in the springtime in Los Angeles, I was out for a walk with my dogs. We passed by the park, and on toward the ocean, admiring the beautiful flowers of late spring. In general, my dogs are almost as observant as their human mom, always on the look out for something interesting or simply, something out of place. This day we went for a hike at Runyon Canyon. It was busy that day at Runyon, filled with many people and their dogs. Tux and Alex are kindred spirits in many ways; both interested in every sight that they could see on the way up to the top of the canyon. Obviously, hiking to the top to see the Hollywood Sign (as we've done a seemingly a thousand times over) is not of interest to them, as in "dog perspective" it's nothing too thrilling at all. What matters the most to them is taking in invigorating fresh air and walking quickly enjoying the freedom and intrigue of seeing many different sights in nature, and new faces - both human and canine. As they both strutted to the top of the canyon with me, with so much joy and determination (yes they strut on each walk with joy and confidence); observing every single dog and person along the way, both made (albeit most of the time quickly) eye contact seemingly with every single human and their respective pooch.

Amazing Plant Based Game Day Snacks
Even if you aren't vegan yet, I think that when you learn that there are so many great options, you may be open to including some, or even all of these options on game day. Chances are that these items will become so popular among you, your friends and your family, that one day these "go-to" quick plant based meals may become your preference. Given everyone's need to build up immunity these days, one tip I do recommend is to add fresh ginger root to everything from wraps to salads and plant based stir fry. Small amounts of fresh ginger root and turmeric provide amazing health benefits. The only word of caution I would advise with fresh ginger root is to use it in moderation, as it has many benefits in small amounts, and to also make sure that if you take any medicine that it does not conflict with that. It has potent anti-inflammatory benefits all on its own!

The Message Left at Shore
Missy Bartholomew was a woman of love and purpose, who retained her joyful wonder, well into her nineties. Each day, prior to her passing, for nearly 50 years, she would walk the shores of Pacific Beach in Southern California, most often with her husband Dan. She and Dan fell in love with the quaint beach town and decided to always reside there, as it was one of their favorite places in the world. Dan and Missy finally reunited after many years apart, when she was in her early 50's and they simply never left, except for the times that they did some world traveling together. Her husband Dan still lives close to the home that they once shared, but he is now in a care home in La Jolla, California. He has been missing his wife who passed away a year ago. La Jolla has given him a new sense of adventure, far enough away to have a new environment for his residence, so that he doesn't feel immense pain that he had been feeling from missing his wife each day, yet close enough that he can return "home" anytime that he chooses.

Honoring Joy
I think one of the best things all of us can do for "self-care" and to bring about a fresh start is to make a commitment to honor and create joy in our own lives, and how this ability has a "ripple effect" where we can inspire those around us too, to do the same. I've often experienced the ability to find the silver lining in most any situation, and how even going through difficult times can provide opportunities for good to come about, simply by making a "heart based" decision to seek the good. We do have the ability to create joy in our own lives. I have had a lot of experience with that. This past year with more time on my hands than what has been typical, I found myself reflecting ...a lot! Reflecting on many happy times, or times that most wouldn't even perceive as happy or joyful at the onset, yet through overcoming and recognizing the good, this has a way of bringing more happiness one's way. Sometimes this brings unexpected joyful moments. Being true to oneself and creating joyful moments I think is crucial to "self care." When we seek the good, more good has a way of presenting itself.
