Why do I volunteer?
volunteer [ vol-uhn-teer ]: to offer oneself for some service or undertaking When I was in college, I studied Cultural Anthropology. In several classes, we discussed the idea of altruism and whether or not true altruism can exist in the world. The idea of altruism on a grand scale is idealistic – helping others with no motive or anything to be gained, personally.

The Child Surprise
I write this post with the intention of starting it out with full disclosure and a bit of a confession. Like many people over the last couple years, I fell in love with a Netflix original show and have told any and everyone that hasn’t seen it to watch it. I have never read the books or played the video games that served as the inspirational source material, so pretty much everything I know about the characters and the world they inhabit comes from the series and the bits of Googling I’ve done to fill the gaps.

Grief in the Hands of a Child
When I was little, my faith came easily. You could not convince me that God didn’t exist, just as surely as the sun will rise. I have always been a trusting person: saying “hello” to anyone, giving strangers hugs – let me just tell you how much I terrified my mother! – and believing the best in others, even if they may not deserve it. With an easy smile and sunny disposition, my childhood nickname at school was “Smiley.”

Sea Change
When I was an undergraduate student, my minor was Environmental Studies. A fitting field of study when you're attending the University of Oregon. One of my classes focused on Sustainability. We covered everything from fossil fuel usage to tiny homes, even getting to tour a community in Eugene that had a small community of tiny houses that served as a half-way home, of sorts, for individuals and families to get back on their feet after economic hardship. Truly an inspirational model that I wish we could see implemented elsewhere.

What's in a Word?
Up to now, I have never chosen a “Word of the Year” for myself to strive to embody. I’ve seen all the posts, the encouraging blogs, the social media posts. All of it. But, unfortunately for me, I am a bit of a perfectionist. I’d spend ages trying to find the perfect word, getting overwhelmed with the plethora of choices, having goals and losing focus by not making a plan before finally giving up before the year and my journey have even started.

Of Life, Nature and Promises
In 1994 I was born into an Air Force family, a lifestyle well known for its tendency to be semi-nomadic. As you can imagine, I grew up with a sense of wonder for the world and an extreme capacity for wanderlust. I have only left the country twice, a weekend trip to Vancouver, Canada when I was ten and a month-long study abroad in Costa Rica, but the list of places I want to go is endless. There are a multitude of reasons for my desire to visit each place: location, culture, festivals, architecture, and wildlife. With the climate changing as rapidly as it is, despite the best efforts of the naysayers to convince us otherwise, many of those places on my lists may be gone in the next few decades, some of them sooner. It is a sad reality when you must prioritize places you wish to see because you're afraid that if you wait too long, you may never see it at all; at least, not for the reason you wanted to go in the first place.
