Your average wandering writer with nothing better to do than listen to arguably trashy music.
The Devil's Music? Or Just Good Music?
So let’s start off straight here. I first listened to a track off the Dead Poet Society’s The Exclamation Album because it popped up at random on Spotify radio. I saved it. I let it play a few times and then I inevitably forgot about it. Cut to my days binging Catfish and the Bottlemen and Nothing But Thieves, I finally take a look at their artist page. What did I learn, you may ask? Well, I learned that it isn’t just My Chemical Romance that can say the word fuck every other lyric and get away with it at high speed.
How Autotune Ruined The Hunna
I was eighteen, fresh out of an alternative High School program, and ready to fucking clean my kitchen. And I think some of you will know what I mean when I say I can’t clean jack shit without music on. Luckily for me, I had discovered a new British rock band several months prior called The Hunna. Now, they weren’t your usual run-of-the-mill kind of talented. They were raw and dirty and I liked every bit of it. At the time, their debut album, 100 hadn’t even been released. And in the age of homes and my shitty iPod touch, I had to scroll through YouTube every five minutes to get the music I wanted.
What is #ripcatfish
I was once in a very small English class in backwoods Montana with an eccentric teacher who also ran the drama program and would often go on rants about Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. Needless to say, the majority of what came out of his mouth was passionate and also bordered on conspiracy theories. But the one thing he said to us that made the most impact? Pop culture is disappearing. Not just for a moment, not just bit by bit. It is going extinct. Do I agree? That’s a loaded question, but the short answer is absolutely not.
What the F**k is Jobcorps?
If you're between the ages of 16 and 24 and you dropped out of High School, chances are, you've heard of Job Corps. A government program created to boost employability among disadvantaged youths, Job Corps is generally most popular for the Fox News special sever years ago that uncovered serious crimes and incidents of abuse at a Jobcorps in North Texas. The special went behind the scenes, showing blatant drug use, violence, and even assault. The scene painted was horrifying and pushed a political agenda to cut funding for the program.
Making the Decision to Simply Be
The world is full of young, impressionable, and oftentimes talented artists. Best known as the group of eccentrics we all meet in High School, artists are everywhere and anywhere. But making the jump from an individual producing work we love, to a paid professional is a big one. And it's not something most people can afford either. After graduation, the world feels bright and new and full of opportunities. But the daunting reality is that you will struggle to get where you want to be. But that's just a sign of your success. If life is easy, you're not doing it right.
My Height is Not My Identity
In men, height is usually an attractive quality to the opposite sex. If a man is tall, he must be an athelete. Football is everyone's best guess. And if he's not an athelete? Well, he still towers over most people. And thats a bonus, right? But why? Why do women like being the smaller of the two? Eve had one more rib than Adam, and yet, it is what we look for in men. More. More height. More muscle. More masculinity.
