Starting Freelance
2021 was probably the toughest year for me so far. I was studying Honours so I had a thesis to complete. Then I got and lost a job in 3 months due to the company closing down so I had to look for a new job while continuing my study. But the toughest part of last year was dealing with toxic flatmates. They constantly talked behind my back, nitpick me on the smallest things I did and if anything went wrong, they placed that blame on me. So, I was desperate to get a job and find my own apartment.

Note Entry (Note)
Recently I wrote a short story titled "Note Entry". The short story was written by combining small pieces of writing I did each day. Each day I picked a prompt from my Pinterest feed and wrote whatever came to my mind. Some days I only wrote a short paragraph, some days I ended up writing a couple of pages. My initial reason for starting this challenge was I noticed I was more productive throughout the day when I did a creative task first. Eventually, I thought it would be a cool idea to make all these small pieces of writing into one short story at the end of each week. Throughout this project, I learnt a lot about my creative process. So, I decided to share the extracts I wrote along with some notes I made to connect all the prompts and things I noticed about the writing process in general. I hope this can inspire more people to start writing and if you want to join in on this writing challenge, feel free to do so! I will be continuing my challenge so please look forward to seeing more chaotic stories that were based around 7 random prompts! I have added the link to the short story, Note Entry at the end of this post.

The Fate on Wrist
“Tibetan fox is now officially extinct” At that moment, everything in Melissa’s life seemed to have stopped. Her hazel eyes were fixated on the TV. But there wasn’t a single thought in her mind. She looked pale even through her already fair skin. Everything around her seemed to have stopped. Everything was dark. The phrase that just came from the TV repeated itself in her mind. The time seemed to slow down and she sat there drowning in the ever-growing feeling of disbelief. The feeling of being lost in life. The doubts in choices she made in life. All the regretful decisions she has made in her life continuously re-playing in her mind. When were they all supposed to end if she was immortal?

Grimoire of Adair Jones
02/06 Thank you my past self for choosing only afternoon lectures on Monday. Well, the best-case scenario would be not having any classes on Monday, but it’s better than having an 8 am lecture. After all my classes were done, I tried to get some study done in the library with my friends, but as usual, it wasn’t the most productive study session. Even when I got back home, I barely made any progress on my assignments. Well, I guess I could have gotten a lot more done if I didn’t watch Netflix after dinner. But also, I kept getting side-tracked while I was working on my assignment.

Grimoire of Adair Jones (Entry 2)
23/06 I went back to the same creek last night. I looked around but I didn’t notice anything that seemed out of ordinary. The sky was clear as usual. I noticed that some of the clouds were shaped like a bird or some type of feathers. Some people think it’s strange, but I always like looking up at the sky. They change colours so often and at night, the stars are always beautiful. I’ve seen a few shooting stars thanks to this weird habit of mine. Once I saw the meteor split and I don’t think I’ll ever forget the sight of that.

Grimoire of Adair Jones
22/06 Finally, it’s Friday. I do like a lot of the journalism courses and I definitely feel like I’m learning a lot more from these courses than when I was in high school. Especially the courses that go through different cultures. I think they’re really interesting and it makes me realise how little I know about the world. It sounds like something most people would be afraid of, but I don’t know, it’s a good realization for me. I haven’t really been able to talk about this to many people at uni. Just because I’m a Taiwanese student studying at a British university, people just assume that I must have a good understanding of different cultures. Well, I guess I have a broader view compared to those people who run these so-called “Asian restaurant”. I don’t know what they are cooking but it’s definitely not Asian food. I can’t wait to go back to Taiwan and eat mum’s cooking. But anyway, the lectures are two hours long! I can’t focus for that long even if I like the content.
