The world around them had become void of moment and sound, as if every living creature had abandoned the once 'hallowed' ground. Not even the wind dared to rustle the trees.

High Times
My name is Jazzie and I am a cat, I am neither old nor am I young but somewhere happily in between. Now, I am not your run of the mill, mouse chasing, dog hating cat. Quite frankly, I dislike everyone but I digress. What is it that makes me special? I not only understand my human, but I talk to him. That’s right, you read that correctly, I speak to my human. This isn’t an everyday occurrence, I can’t afford to spoil the poor creature. No, I only speak to him when he has smoked his human-nip. I can only assume the humans sought to be more like us, so they found their own version of catnip. Endearing creatures, humans.

Checkmate
I had reached my limit with the horrors of humanity. I had witnessed too many blood soaked streets, littered with the bodies of the innocent. I had seen enough corruption and greed to put the devil to shame. I couldn’t take it anymore, I couldn’t stand by any longer. Usually people like me prefer to stay far away from historical events in time when we travel the Lines. Time was a fickle bitch and the moment a grain of sand shifted, she was altering and branching off into a new timeline causing further chaos, confusion and divide amongst humanity.

Unseen Battles
Sometimes it feels like I am alone and in a sense, I guess I am. See, unlike a battle scarred veteran who wars are told on his skin, my war can not be seen by others. I pass for whatever normal means these days, I make it through social interactions wearing a carefully crafted mask that comes with its own guide to approved behaviors. I can switch between the masks almost instantly if the need arises but nifty little tricks like that come at a high cost, a king’s ransom could compare.

The earth as my Ancestors and Elders knew it had long since become something of a myth instead of reality. The Elders told of how our Ancestors had been warned time and time again that they were killing their planet but time and time again, they failed to heed those warnings. Their world was thrown into peril with nations warring against nations for control of remaining resources. Lost in the haze of war, humanity forgot about the long term effects of their nuclear holocausts.

Repetition
“Find them and you may wind up finding yourself in the process.” His words echoed in my thoughts like a song stuck on repeat. He had given me my first real case, one that was above my current security clearance with the SPU (Special Phenomenon Unit). Normally I worked in the field visiting supposedly haunted houses, strange creature sightings, and the typically cliche crop circles. Nothing major, nothing extremely serious or detrimental to national security. I would write a report, send it in and go about my business. I never asked questions, never attempted to learn more. To me it was common sense that if I wanted to live a long life and not mysteriously disappear, I needed to keep to myself and not make waves but this, this assignment was going to do more than make waves. It was going to be the beginning of the end for my bosses if word ever reached the people.

What If..
What if I told you that this was Hell? What if I told you that Hell had become so overpopulated with the damned that they no longer had enough demons to control the population. They stole a page from a famous movie and decided that a simulated version of Hell was more effect, saving the physical torture for the worst of the worst.

Ghosts and Mirrors
I will never forget the stories my grandmother used to tell me when no one was around. My family was super religious so they did not approve of anything that was not in the bible or about becoming a better Christian. After a particularly scary tale she would remind me that I was not to breathe a word of it to anyone. I was little at the time so I didn’t think anything of it. It was our little secret. I loved secrets, they made me feel important and special.
