The Two Originals
It was six in the evening when I finally began drifting off to sleep. For three and a half years we’ve been on the run hiding in abandoned vehicles, buildings, caves, or any makeshift shelter we could find. It’s just the two of us left, and the exhaustion is overpowering. I can’t even remember the last time I had a full night’s rest, let alone a tasty warm meal. Stale bread and lukewarm water are all that’s sustained us for the last few months, and I can’t bring myself to look in a mirror for fear of what I might see. If my godson’s appearance is any indication, I must look dreadful.

The Birth of Bantu Village
The year 2020 started off with a bang and ended with a sonic boom, making it a year unlike any other ever in history. I quit my management job the last couple days of 2019, since I refused to start 2020 in the same toxic environment that plagued me all year under the organization’s new leadership. It wasn’t until I submitted my resignation that the true immensity of negative energy weighing me down and draining me physically, mentally, and spiritually, really hit home. I felt released. The danger of condoning and supporting terrible leaders is that you will lose your best and most dedicated workers. A quote that resonates with me and helped shape my decision to move on says, ‘learn to get up from the table when love is no longer being served.’

An Encounter with Lions
As I planned my trip to Zimbabwe, I remember talking to Sarah my excursion specialist about wanting to do something extra special for my birthday. Every year I plan a trip to a new and exciting place, and I wanted to make sure my tour to Victoria Falls was unforgettable. Sarah listened to my explanation of a wanting an amazing adventure, and excitedly told me that I have to check out the lion cubs. Immediately my mind pictured adorable little cubs that were eager to explore their surroundings and play with adoring tourists. As a cat lover, I couldn’t think of a better way to indulge my wanderlust with my partiality for felines. The built-up excitement for my trip was laser focused on that experience.

Warrior Woman
It’s been a few years since we said our last goodbye. You were a bit confused about where you were when you woke up in the middle of the night, so I reminded you that you were staying by your daughter in Long Island. Your stark white hair a lovely contrast to your beautiful brown skin, told the tale of a long life well lived.

The Beginning of Something Epic
Heavy rain poured down as Sophia slunk behind the wall of the darkened physics building. Peering around the corner she spied two men arguing over something she couldn’t make out. The parking lot was empty except for two sleek luxury cars, one red and the other black. Their headlights cast the men’s shadows against the building, as she crouched down low. As she strained to hear what they were saying, her mind drifted back to earlier that morning.

A Lesson Well Learned
"Which mask should I put on today," the young child asked her mom. "An ugly troll, a cheerful gnome, or fairy full of charm?" Her mother turned from cleaning up and signed with pure frustration. "Hurry up, you'll miss the bus and have no transportation."
