The Cardinal Sin
I awoke to darkness. Breathing heavily through the coarse rucksack which covered my face, I took in the putrid smell of the budding Callery pear trees. My wrists were fastened tightly to the wooden post my back rested on. I hesitated to squirm because the chaffing on my wrist was becoming unbearable. In between my labored breathing, I could hear the almost inaudible murmuring of people. I was no fool, this wasn't the first time I witnessed a public execution but it was the first time I've been part of one.

Yuki-Onna
Droplets of blood impressed themselves upon the soft blanket of fresh snow. A rapid crunching of snow ceased, and the boy began to inspect his surroundings frantically before fixating his attention on the lacerations on his arm. He silently observed his bleeding as the surrounding cold numbed the burning pain which emanated from his torn bicep. The boy ripped a strip of his dingy kimono to create a makeshift tourniquet. If he could stop the bleeding it would be far easier to escape his pursuers.
