The Root of Most Problems
Before I get into the article, I want to address some key issues. I know that just by putting the phrase "Universal Income" in the subtitle, most people are either coming in ready to support or are coming in ready to tear me to shreds. Most people already have their minds set on whether this idea is good or bad. As a preface, I am not advocating for a fully socialist system. I am also not saying we should fully abolish the class system. The other thing I will not be addressing is how to fund a universal basic income. The scope of this article is addressing the usefulness of a universal income from an ethical standpoint and an economic standpoint, as well as addressing the most common argument against a universal income.

A Student's Semester In Scotland
The year 2022 will start with me taking a long, solo trip, as that is when I will spend a semester at the Ayr Campus of the University of West of Scotland pursuing the second master’s degree I will be getting. To say that I am looking forward to this trip would be one of the biggest understatements I could make currently. I cannot wait to start my life as an international scholar while also getting the chance to explore the second country on my “To Visit” list, nor can I wait to see the sight that inspired one of my favorite traditional songs, “Loch Lomond” which I once performed during my undergraduate career as part of a tenor/bass choir. The largest draw, however, is the call of my ancestral homeland as a descendant of the Clan Donald who ruled the western islands of Scotland.

Somebody Has to Care
Recently, I watched Hamilton for the first time, after putting it off for years. There's a popular Native American proverb about having two wolves inside you, locked in constant fighting. The one who wins is the one you feed. Why are these two things related? Because I have decided that the two in me are best represented by the characters Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. For a while, I have been feeding Burr by staying quiet and just trying to get through life. That stops now (or soon, depending on whether I can keep my anxiety about speaking up in check). I'm fed up with a lot of things and it's time I did something about it. I will be applying for law school at Boston University, to hopefully start in 2022 in one of their dual degree programs. It’s time to be more like Hamilton and not play it safe, even if it costs me.
