You Are That You Are, and You Are Enough
I feel that there is nothing more powerful in life than being unapologetically you. Learning how to "just be" is a necessary skill that will teach you how to separate your emotions from yourself, which will be helpful in situations when you feel out of control. This skill is also important when you're in a difficult situation, because it can help you make the right decision. Practicing "just being" helps you learn how to recognize the true nature of your feelings and emotions. Here are a few tips on how to do that:

How to Become a Human-Being Once Again
Wake up, check the phone, scroll through social media, shower, get dressed, scarf down some breakfast, have a quick listen to the radio, TV or news, then immediately start the day's work. Does that sound like a “human-being”? But wait, there’s more to a typical day in the life of a human in today's modern age! Second phase: Eat lunch while scrolling through your phone, back to work for the rest of the afternoon, come home to check the mail, email, missed calls etc., cook dinner, wind down with a favourite TV show while simultaneously checking the phone and social media, then it's off to bed.

Ending the Comparison Game
Have you ever caught yourself thinking “wow, I wish I was as successful as that person?” or “my life is so boring, look at all the fun places they have travelled to”? Thank you social media for putting everyone’s life on display so that we can feel inferior about ourselves. The reality is that everyone has their own insecurities, but it’s the people who have developed the awareness that comparing oneself to others brings nothing but jealousy, bitterness, and low self-esteem, and have thus chosen to not care what is going on in others lives, who are the most happy with theirs.

Solfeggio Frequencies - FEEL IT TO HEAL IT
The use of specific tones of sound can be traced back to ancient historical societies who understood the power of these frequencies to help heal various aspects of one’s body, mind and soul. Virtually all forms of religion from Western Christianity to Eastern Indian religions have incorporated these tones into their chants, with Gregorian Monks, Indian Sanskrit chants and Buddhist monks using the power of “Om” to resonate deep within every cell of the human body.

Meditation and My Recovery Journey
“Start a meditative practice. Be mindful of your breath and the world around you. Breath into that space. Build that bridge between your head and your heart. Surrender, and let go. Breath in love, exhale fear.” Still experiencing the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, ashamed of myself for having to be in a drug and alcohol recovery rehab because I had burnt every last bridge and now had no place to go, I was certainly not in the right frame of mind to let these suggestions sink in. I was arrogant, naive, pessimistic, and overcome with guilt and shame. I thought to myself “how can meditation be a part of my recovery? I didn’t come to a rehab to have spiritual practices pushed upon me!”

All I Want for Christmas...KETTLEBELLS!
2020 has been the year of adaptation to many parts of my life due to Covid-19, becoming a step-father to three little girls, and maintaining my sobriety through extremely triggering scenarios. As I have mentioned in previous articles, my health and fitness have become the pillar of my recovery from alcohol addiction, with Power Fitness Gym having been my sanctuary. With my gym being temporarily “out of order” and balancing the hectic lifestyle of three kids between the age of 4 and 9 years old, I have had to alter my fitness regime to fit my new schedule and get creative with my home gym. Christmas is just around the corner and this year I am asking Santa for the one piece of equipment that I know would keep me functionally fit in a matter of 20 minutes a day in the backyard….a set of kettlebells!

Big Arms, Broad Chest, One Exercise, No Gym Required!
Physical exercise, the pillar of my sobriety. Whether it's hitting the gym, enjoying nature on a trail hike or paddling out to the line-up for a surf session, I keep my body healthy and active to maintain my recovery from an alcohol addiction that nearly killed me. Then Covid-19 made its presence known and shut-down gyms, one my favourite safe havens. The silver lining out of this was finding my love again for the humble push up, a staple of calisthenics exercises that can be done in a small space.
