Underneath the Pear Tree
“Meet me at our spot under the pear tree tonight” I carefully fold the handwritten letter up and hide it in my pillow case. If my parents found out about Izzy, I could lose everything as well as bring shame on my family. We used to be close friends growing up, but after her father’s scandal their entire family were shamed. Honestly I didn’t mind, she and I would meet up often by the pear tree. It started as friends but over the years, friends started to grow into something more. I loved her… I do love her. Ever since her father shamed her family we would meet to talk about ways we could escape, but there always seem to be things making it feel impossible.

Birthday Gift
A knock on the door never felt so terrifying. If this were any other day it wouldn’t worry me as much, but this day is different from the others. Today marks the anniversary of my birth. That may not seem like something worrying to many, but I’m different from other people. I have no friends or family members, and I have recently moved. So the chances of someone knowing my birthday and my address to send me something are very slim, but not impossible.

A Night to Forget
The fluorescent lights flicker above me in perfect timing, as if it were conducting a hidden song so hypnotizing, I didn’t even notice the middle-aged waitress impatiently asking me if I was ready to order. My attention quickly focused on her dishevelled uniform and mousey blonde hair escaping the single hair band that rest carefully on her right shoulder. Her tired and annoyed expression made me anxious.
