The Clown´s Gambit
Stuck at school all through the Christmas holidays, nine boys with nowhere to go. My mother had caught tuberculosis, so I wasn't allowed to go home and the other boys´ parents all lived abroad. Kalubushi´s father had been President of his country until the revolution. No one knew where Kalu´s parents were, or what was to become of him once the school fees came due.

The Worker´s Tale
A strong hive might contain five thousand workers, my apiaries might be home to forty thousand in the summer. In the spring, the queen will lay as many as a thousand eggs a day, most of them will become worker bees, which will take on different tasks at different stages in their lives. Typically they live for a few weeks; only the queen can expect to live longer.

Write!
I told the lads at the boxing club that I do not use TikTok and had never bought anything from Amazon, they were amazed. I went on to tell them about my attempt to boycott the twenty-first century, a time in which I do not feel at home. Hearing in my own voice the futility of such a project, I decided to make a purchase from the richest man on Earth, thus started my very own Amazon Adventure, with two writer´s guides no less.

To Meghan, Duchess of Sussex
Many years ago, before either you or your husband were born, I joined the British Army and served as an officer in the same regiment as Prince William and the Duke of Sussex. Having spent four years on the margins of that social set, I believe every word you have said about their bigotry and rudeness. They are courtiers and exclusive access to royalty is often their only capital, so they have become very practiced at repulsing newcomers. Children don´t grow up making spiteful, racist remarks, such as were directed at you, rather this is the product of a culture which holds all “others” in contempt.

Dead Man Sitting
Jeffrey sat slumped on the lower bunk of his cell, staring at his hands in silence. His attorney lifted the creases in his trouser legs a fraction, then sat on the only chair in the small, close room. He was accustomed to the smell of latrines and sweaty clothes. He often met his clients in their cells but not usually so late in the evening.
