My Cockatiel is Teaching My Dog
In our household, there are two animals: Luna has been with us the longest - at 9 years old she has been my companion for 6 years. She is a little gray cockatiel with white markings, and for the first part of her life she lived at a bird rescue and rehabilitation center, sequestered in little upgraded shed with 4 or 5 large rescue macaws. She is full of sass, hates crows with a fiery burning passion, and loves popcorn as an occasional treat.

I am so Tired
I don’t want to sleep. I am tired and I have a headache, but I don’t want to sleep. My head is too full of me right now, and I am exhausted. But it is easier to stay awake than to try to force myself to fall asleep. I never thought that I would get to a point where falling asleep would be so hard. I am always tired, always on the verge of needing a nap. Some days I get lucky and sleep comes easy. I can lie down and find my comfortable sleep position without my heart feeling like it will burst out of my chest, or that weird stitch in my side. Some nights I don’t have the strange jerk that jolts me out of dozing and hurts my already painful joints. Once in a while, I don’t wake at every slight sound. I can stay asleep as my body readjusts to a better position.

You Will Always Hurt the Ones You Love
You will always hurt the ones you love - a common cautionary phrase used to direct us throughout our interactions with family and friends. Usually, it points to heartbreak or betrayal, and in most cases is not taken literally. But sometimes, the literal interpretation is appropriate.

Bringing Dewey HomeTop Story - August 2022
My husband was getting ready to leave for an internship in just under a month, so the two of us were talking more and more seriously about getting a dog. We had both been talking about it for months, discussing the pros and cons, what types of breeds we wanted, the size of the dog, and how we would train it. I've had dogs my whole life, but this would be my husband's first pet aside from a betta fish when he was a young child. As often happens with decisions like this, our idea of an ideal dog was nothing like what we ended up with. We thought that a smaller dog, like a schnauzer, pug, or a poodle mix of some kind would be ideal in our apartment. I have pretty bad joint problem and osteoarthritis, so we thought having a dog would help me to exercise more regularly, which would improve my mobility and flexibility. Because of how easily I can get hurt, we figured a small dog might be safer for me to walk.

It's ok to be scared
The room was dark and very quiet, a few hushed whispers breaking the silence as the crowd settled in. Waiting. I looked around nervously, trying to pick up any hint of movement in the dim city hall. I brushed worriedly at my warm jacket with one hand, the other clutching tightly my little Siamese cat beanie baby, which I carried with me every where. A few minutes passed, and I began to relax into my seat, carefully tucking Snip into my pocket so I wouldn't lose her in the dark. I vaguely registered the sound of a door opening and closing, and was about to scan around the room again when...

Living with Luna
Have you ever been sitting at your desk, trying to study or get work done, and decide you want a nice crunchy snack to eat? I'm sure most of us know this desire, and have acted upon it. After getting that snack, have you ever had a tiny little gray gremlin try to sneak across the desk, right in front of you, to steal said snack? And then run away, scattering cracker or peanut crumbs all over your laptop?
