A Bump in the Road
We reached the third day of our journey and, to be honest, things were not going well. For a start, the sun had devised a cunning plot to bake us alive. According to weather reports, we were in the midst of the hottest May on record. So imagine our delight when the air con in Jem's car conked out on the first day of our holiday. I tugged at the collar of my sweat-soaked shirt and undid another button. "Jem, can't we crack open another window or something? For christ's sake, I'm melting over here!"
She looked so vulnerable sitting in the coffee shop drinking her hot chocolate. It had been a while since they'd seen each other and their relationship had been somewhat restrained. Sarah paid for her Grande Skinny Latte and carried it over to the table. Her daughter looked up at her almost sheepishly.
She saw the way he looked at her, this was real. She'd never felt so sure of anything in her whole life. Or, to be more accurate, she'd never been so sure of a relationship in her whole life. She hadn't chased this one, she had resisted pursuing him! Call it self preservation, but she didn't want to feel like she was forcing him to want her. No, she wanted him to come to her. Thats not to say she was cold around him, She made sure as to leave him in no doubt about how she felt. For the first time ever, somebody had met her half way.
Jenny waited nervously as he came back from paying the bill. The date had gone well and she didn't think she'd said anything too foolish. It was nice of him to insist on paying, but she felt a little uneasy about being in his debt. She wasn't sure how she felt about him and didn't want to give the impression that she was a money grabber. She liked to pay her way. She wasn't one of those women that got aggressive when it came to date etiquette and she didn't mind him paying, but it was about equality. She didn't want any assumption to be made. Was she a contradiction? She wanted to pay her own way to avoid feeling like she owed him. But she couldn't lie to herself, she'd felt a thrill rise from the pit of her stomach when he'd taken the initiative. She wanted a man in that sense. But she wanted to have a clear slate if she decided not to see him again.
Full of Surprises
The memory of the weight of his body pressed against hers would enter her head at the most inopportune times. She’d often find herself thinking about that night on the train during her commute to work. Visions of them entwined in each others bodies, dripping with sweat, would come to her while she was brushing her teeth or waiting for the kettle to boil for her 5th cup of coffee that day.
His eyes widened as he saw her sashaying effortlessly down the red carpet. “Wow” he whispered under his breath as he took the sight of her in.The way she looked in that dress. She looked like she was born to be there. There were no words that he could use to describe what he saw as she made her way towards him. At least none that could do her justice. He wracked his brain, but came up with nothing. None of the words that flitted through his mind seemed to encapsulate the vision that was her. She was phenomenal. She was wondrous, she was captivating, alluring, seductive and amazing and still, that didn’t quite cut it. She was nothing short of incredible.
I'm sorry, I love you.
Jamie stared out across the reservior one last time before he rose to his feet and made his way along the narrow path towards the quarry. The quarry had been used to build the reservoir almost 70 years ago when the local district had been forced to reconsider the water system in Yorkshire. It was a steep drop, easily about a 90 feet. The rocks were jagged and sharp, deadly. Each rock was a slightly different shades of grey from the next. Some were almost jet black. Some were a light soft grey and some even had a slightly purple hue, if you looked at them in the right light. Even without the gun Jamie reckoned that one slip could guarantee certain death.
