Zigzag
The first time I used a pair of Fiskars I was four years old. It was an orange handled set of pinking shears and when I held those blades in my hands, it felt pretty magical. The urge to cut and create was overwhelming, where should I start? Haircuts for Barbie and me, of course. I dragged the full-length mirror from the bathroom into my closet and snipped away discreetly. After each chunk of blonde fell to the carpet I whispered “Perfect”. The excitement quickly transitioned into disappointment when I did my big reveal; to say my mother wasn’t pleased would be an understatement. It may have been the first time I saw her cry, actually. From that point on the pair of zigzag scissors became contraband, and she made sure to hide them from us children in every apartment we lived in. Or so she thought, because I was continuously sneaking into their drawers and pulling them out when I felt inspired or a bit naughty.

Decaf
I watched the coffee maker add its last few drops of sludge into the pot and tried to hide my disgust from the customers. The flavor was about as bland as this town, and after seven years of working in this diner I still couldn’t comprehend how anyone could voluntarily drink it. Or eat anything off of the carb heavy breakfast menu for that matter, aside from the almond croissant. It was inexplicably divine, and maybe one of the only options this place provided that wouldn’t guarantee a heart attack.

Bathtub
She used her finger to scrape the last bits of peanut butter out of the jar and divided the smear amongst two slices of toast. Thank god neither of the twins is allergic, she thought to herself. She really couldn’t afford another breakfast option. She called up the stairs once more and finally heard the dull thud of a child leaving its bed. Then another one. It was now safe to grind coffee and not end up with two grumpy little beasts, startled by her morning fix. She heard their hooves stampede towards the kitchen and laid two mismatched plates on the table.
