Roy rifled the last trashcan on his city park evening route. He scored a few cans, cigarette butts, some half-full take-out boxes, a newspaper — which was handy on dewy nights to keep the wet off his blanket. It’d pass for a rolling paper, too, since he couldn’t bum any today. He headed for his last stop.

The Cricket and the Ant
Zephyrs of summer wind teased the verdant landscape into recitals of grass ballet. Heady blossom scents collided with evaporating earth musk, joining essences in wild bouquets of redolence. Cicada concerti reeded their seven-year inspirations to a score composed in darkness. Frustrated with their irritating dissonance, the cricket raised his own distinctive chirr.

Marlee's Muse
“Underqualified. For a barmaid job.” Marlee blew this out of her mask as she slammed her catch-all bag down on the subway seat and plopped beside it. The memory of the bar manager’s oily phone voice saying, “Come by after we’re closed,” raised an uncontrollable shiver. Marlee wished she could scrape his smarmy visage from her thoughts like the winter mud clotting her boots.
