The Socks, or Where You Meet My Charming Sister
Sometimes I don't know why I even bother. It's like talking to a wall. My sister, Jessie, is the most impossible person that ever was. This argument had gone on for days, and we weren't any closer to ending it--and it's all over socks.

Community Theater Hates COVID
The COVID pandemic has been a rollercoaster for everyone. It's hard to find anyone whose life hasn't been affected, whether from suffering the virus themselves, losing loved ones, economic impacts, job losses, upheaval to education, or broken relationships due to ideologies regarding science, politics, and vaccines.

A Busy Mom's Guide to Healthy Food
I remember the days of eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Those were great days! I could chalk it up to being a kid, having a better metabolism, or simply the fact that way back then, nutrition and fitness weren't at the forefront of everyone's consciousness.

Hokkaido Bread: a Simple, Sweet Treat from Japan
Bread. One of the world's simplest foods and one that many of us have a love/hate relationship with. Homemade bread is a pleasure to make and eat, and if you fancy yourself a baker, you've probably made different kinds. My family loves making (and, of course, eating!) bread, so Italian bread, baguettes, sourdough, pizza dough, and whole-grain loaves are routine for us. We whip up pita and English muffins, naan, and focaccia and wouldn't even consider getting them at a grocery store anymore. They're all delicious, and you could plan a month's worth of meals from around the world using these kinds of bread.

Smoothies: the Perfect Snack for Kids
Snacks. As if moms don't have enough to do in a day, kids seem always to want a snack. It can be maddening when little ones ignore a healthy lunch only to clamor for something to eat as soon as you clear it away. While snacks like Goldfish or pretzels are convenient and kid-friendly, it's better to limit processed food high in salt, sugar, and preservatives, especially if they ignore the healthy meals you prepare.

Homemade Pizza, the Healthy Way
Is there a time I'm not craving pizza? Spoiler alert: there isn't. Thanks to COVID-19, I haven't had pizza from a pizzeria since March 2020. Seriously. My family is finally thinking about getting takeout, now that we're all about to be completely vaccinated. This would be our first restaurant food in over a year because we took restrictions seriously and decided it wasn't worth the risk. Pizza is very high on our wishlist.

Freedom, Two Ways
It was happening again. Alicia flinched and ducked her head under the covers. When Dad came home drunk, there was nothing to do but hope you could avoid the line of fire. Luckily, it was late, so he wouldn't expect to find the kids awake. It was better that way.

Easy Homemade Lunches for Better Health
We all have stories to tell about our health goals, some of which were affected by COVID-19 and over a year of lockdown. I was working a catering job (and doing some freelance writing on the side) when everything shut down. Catering was a mixed bag for me. It was easy work in the sense that I worked a shift and never thought about the job once I left. It was hard work in the sense that it was physically demanding, didn't pay very well, and the hours were ridiculous.

The Empress of Evil
My family loves animals. Over the years, we've had just about every pet there is. From parakeets to fire belly toads, mice to guinea pigs, rabbits to hamsters…we’ve had them all. We raised chickens in the backyard for nine nears, beloved pets that happened to gift us with delicious eggs. We’ve raised gerbils, turtles, fish, one neurotic dog who lived for nearly 17 years...and cats. Cats are the best, the one animal I can't imagine living without.
