Shackles
Hera was always different from the other girls in our neighborhood. While the rest of us dreamed of playing house and having families, she had her sights set on something entirely different. I remember her speaking with a glint of expectation in her eyes, as she talked about the life she wanted to lead. "This life is not for me," she'd tell me when I'd pressure her to play house with me. She didn't want to play house with me or with anyone else. There was nothing she found less appealing than waiting for a husband or chasing toddlers around. "What would you like to be in the future?" I'd ask her, but her answers remained the same. "I just want to be free."
