Drowning In The Middle
The man lay in rest among others of his kind breath stolen away. Awakening slowly, flat on my back and unmoving, my body lying in an ultra-firm, postoperative ward bed. I swear those beds are designed to motivate me to get out of post-op as quickly as possible. Not that I ever needed the motivation.

The Great Silence
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. An entirely false saying, by the way. I’m somebody, and my screams filled the helmet of my suit. They still echo in my mind. What would you do if you found yourself floating alone between Jupiter and Mars? You would do exactly what I did, crap your pants and then scream your throat hoarse.

Jumieges
1 It always starts with a body. My involvement in crime always begins with a body. Murder is the most heinous of crimes even in our modern times. My appointment as a detective came after the unfortunate Crippen murder case. Working the beat, I knew the Doctor and Cora Crippen well. My suspicions and Inspector Dew's led us to search their house. The search led us to discover the body, leading to Inspector Dew's dramatic speedy crossing of the Atlantic to arrest the subject and his girlfriend.

Reverberations
Science doesn't lie, Lucas thought, but it doesn't always know the whole story. Stationed at the Tucson nighttime observation facility, he had enjoyed the near non-stop memes flashing across his social media. They all conveyed the same message, "Science Doesn't Lie." The memes were funny at first, then grew more tragic. But then it got him thinking strange thoughts. Thoughts the typically quiet young man shared with his fellow researcher Felecia, "Science doesn't lie, but it does change. Doesn't it?"

The Shoebox
Marc’s eyes burned, thick tears lodging in the corner of each eye. The air where he walked at the edge of a dying town flew about in cyclones of dust and debris. No matter what trick he tried, the dust penetrated and dug into his eyes. The burning sensation annoyed, but not as much as the dry scratching sound the dead leaves made on the concrete sidewalk.
