Trained For a Disaster
Horace is on his back in the middle of an aisle on the train. He's just regained consciousness, and is very groggy. It takes him a few minutes to gauge his surroundings: he's on a train, and it's definitely moving. He peeks out the window in horror, watching the rocky scenery rushing past at an alarming speed.

The Children From the Flames
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. The cabin used to be hidden in a lush forest. We first found it by accident. It had mostly burned down, with a road built right alongside it. I found an aging newspaper clipping in my parent's attic that same week. It was about the fire. A family of four had perished, according to the headline.

When I was little, I marveled at my dad's skills. He fixed complicated analog machines. He built a doohickey that unscrambled 1980's television paywall stations (remember those?) He set up camps, and built fires. He barbecued a steak with the best of them.
