Trying my hand at short stories, always liked to read but never thought I would be able to write stories. Vocal gives me that possibility with their challenges.
If you like any of my stories, please leave a tip!
Footprints in the Snow
TW/CW: Self-harm is vaguely mentioned. Gently swaying back and forth like a buoy moving with the flow of the sea, Jordan came to slowly. Greeted with fragmented lights and distorted images, like a camera shutter, he cleared his vision. Instantly, realizing the roof did not hold the familiarity of his room at home. With adrenaline-infused muscles, he scrambled to his feet and turned while absorbing his surroundings. Boxes stacked neatly around the circumference of the - room? But he felt subtle movement, so, maybe — a van? Either way, he should not have been there.
Along Came the Spider
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window, the first line said. Scoffing, not bothering to read further, Sean returned the bruised and battered keep case to the shelf. He dusted his hand free of the cobweb as he browsed the other shelves before settling on his purchases. What felt like hours later, exhausted, Sean collapsed on his threadbare lumpy couch and promptly fell asleep.
Cabin by the Lake - A Siren's Song
"The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window," said Donovan. Scanning the faces of his long-time friends, he contemplated if he should relay the events that happened at the very same campsite they currently occupied. Donovan hesitated only a moment before eventually taking up the story again. After all, he had made a promise. To do otherwise would be a mistake he was not prepared to make.
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. It was said; that an apparition resided amongst the foliage from time to time, occupying the cabin on its return. The small town some miles away knew to stay clear of the old cabin, but hikers passing through the area never heard of such tales passed down from generation to generation. So it happened, on that particular night, when the moon bathed the surroundings in its pearlescent glow and not an animal whispered through the tall grass, the hikers came across what first appeared to be an abandoned dwelling.
Amber Light, Emerald Twilight
Prologue There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Though the tales and stories told would imply that dragons existed in our distant past where knights slew them for glory and fame. But those stories are myths and adventures that stimulate the young minds of children. To inspire their imagination and paint the world as something magical and worthwhile. To encourage little ones to either be a knight able to take on the world or a damsel in distress where the knight sweeps in to save her and bestow unending love. When she was a young girl and told she would meet one of these legendary beings one day, the anticipation would have frozen the breath in her lungs, and the thought of a knight coming to the rescue would infuse her being with mounting excitement. However, the reality was far from anything they had imagined.
Turning a New Leaf
If there ever came a time when someone asks me what my life was like growing up or what would be the most pivotal event, I honestly wouldn’t know how to answer. So, when this challenge went live, I read the requirements, wondered what I would talk about then decided it wasn’t for me. Thinking back nothing stood out to me as awe-inspiring, drastic or as the challenge puts it ‘coming-of-age’. But I thought about it overnight, and came to the decision that as plain as I see my life, what would it hurt to tell others?
Sun, sand and sea, this is what home means to me, open skies, a pure breeze, nothing can compare in my memory. Seagulls calling, gliding, swooping, seemingly hovering overhead, pinpointing their next meal, more often than not waiting in anticipation to be fed.
When the Ice Melts
It’s been a few days since the snowstorm blew in, one I was not prepared for in any way. Nonetheless, I endured, the temperature was brutal, the winds strong, pounding at the walls of the cabin. As I stand looking out the window, violent flurries of snowflakes dance with erratic movements caused by the random change in direction of the wind. The sun never truly disappears from the night sky, a faint glow on the horizon can be seen, but in no way was I fooled into thinking it was safe to venture outside, if only to replenish my stack of logs by the stone fireplace. My current supply will have to do.
Government Rally at Midnight
Those embarrassing moments that for some may have happened in a public setting, it could be falling down in front of your entire class or tripping over your own feet walking through downtown. There are more than a hundred ways anyone can embarrass themselves, probably at the time your one wish would be for the ground to open and swallow you, especially if there wasn't a quick getaway option.
From Me to You
Adult Swim, do you remember, because I sure do. Late nights sneaking to the living room, dead at night while the world is sleeping, to catch my favorite anime movie or episode. Heart racing, hands clammy, the television turned to the lowest volume possible so as not to wake my mom. If I’m caught being up so late on a school night, extra chores would have been the least of my worries.
