Resolve to Rest.
I don’t know about you, but the job of making a list of New Year’s Resolutions retired for me in 2018. Since then it became more about setting fresh intentions each year: intending to be healthy and happy vs. resolving to lose 20 pounds and get lean like Halle Berry. The only resolution I made that year was to build trust in myself. Trust that as long as my intention and attention were focused and heartfelt that all else would fall into place. Trust that I would no longer need to accomplish specific resolutions to allow myself to feel happy. Trust that I could allow myself to take inspired action and be led to my innate joy, no excessive pressure or stress necessary. Trust in my heart, my desires, and my own unique path forward.

Building Strength Through Trust
What made me discover my true strengths, you ask? I believe I am in the midst of discovering some of my greatest strengths as I write this. Sitting in a little cafe called Coffee Break in Hackensack, NJ while my mother undergoes 8 hours of chemotherapy at the nearby John Theurer Cancer Center, I am finding strength and faith in places I’ve never felt before. I am simultaneously broken and renewed. There is so much more treatment still ahead of us, so many variables to consider, and unfortunately I cannot stop time or the rest of life from moving forward until it is over. I’ve already asked and it’s a pretty hard “NO”.

The Shift From Lack to Abundance
I am writing this from a current physical reality of more lack than I desire, more lack than I know is truly meant for me. I am writing this from a place of having only $1124 in one account, $33 in another, $9 cash in my wallet, and a $10 winning scratch off in my purse. Out of that, there is a $1000 check written and sent, 3 credit card bills due over the next week, a cell phone bill due, and a few entertainment and subscription bills due. That leaves me with roughly $-77 dollars. That is in the RED. In the negative. And not counting anything else I need or want to feel alive and well in the present moment, like food, treats for my dog, a bottle of wine, etc.

Together, We Make One
So I am 14 years old. I am a freshman in high school. My best male friend comes out to me. He likes a boy. He only likes boys. And he’s not ready to tell his family and friends. He’s nervous. He’s vulnerable. And he somehow knew that, with me, he was absolutely safe to be all of himself. With me, a difficult truth to share out loud was just a bit easier and met with kind. With me, anything and everything that is real and human is allowed no matter how hard it is to say. With me, the only hard part is saying it, doing it, being it, whatever it is, in a world that can be so narrow-minded while we cultivate a space of expansive self expression.

The City of Los Angeles
I moved to the city of Los Angeles in March of 2020 just as the pandemic started to take hold of the entire world. Date nights for my man and I turned into living room picnics of local take-out, homemade cocktails, and live virtual concerts. Such a treat in this city, in the lap of luxury, where every kind of cuisine is available top-notch.

Dear Baby Girl
March 23, 1987 Dear Baby Girl, Oh, if only I had magical powers that would allow you to see yourself through my eyes. If only I could show you what I see; all that you are right this very moment; all that went into your creation; all that you will become; all that has been endured and healed in the womb that created and birthed you — the women who have lived just for you to be. Here. Now.

The Power of Positive Emotions
I don’t know much. I can only retain so many hard facts in any given moment, but one thing I can say with absolute certainty is that it is important to feel good. Another is that we are uniquely capable of self-generating positive emotions and experiences that allow us to feel good. The last is that the world we live our day to day life in is abundant with opportunities to experience positive emotions and feel good, if even just for a moment, and in even greater proportions than there are opportunities for negative emotions. Our free will to choose and focus our attention makes it so we can access a more positive experience if we choose to open ourselves to the possibilities that already exist. This, and this alone, has the capacity to transform our lives in any way we wish, almost like magic. This is our birthright. Life is meant to be enjoyed, and the best part is that it is probably easier than you think! I would even go as far as to say it is the most necessary piece in our overall evolution as a human race at this time.
