Sophie and Henry’s house was still, quiet. Standing at the laundry sink in the basement, Henry was wringing water out of some clothes with as much power as his forearms could muster. It was early morning, a single lightbulb illuminated the dark room. Looking up, he saw a dribble of water that had permeated the basement walls. The lights flickered.

Sun of darkness
Layla had a very hard time understanding why her parents were so frightened. She overhead them talking about the fear of the unknown. Being five years old, much of the world was still unknown to her. It was just a change she thought, so why are my parents acting super anxious and keeping me inside? Keeping me from going to school and seeing my friends. Every time Layla’s Dad came back from outside he seemed fine, Layla was sure she would be too. She didn’t think the change was menacing, although she couldn’t articulate that.

Emerge
Anna sat quietly in her dark bedroom, the only light coming from the door that was slightly ajar. Having lived the vast majority of her life underground, she was used to darkness, and found it more comfortable than artificial light. Anna was now sixty years old, and had retreated into the safety of the bunker with her mother when she was seven. She was lost in thought.
