Island of Isolation
Last year, near the beginning of the current pandemic brouhaha, I wrote this piece to help people I know deal with the change. I felt I was in a unique place to offer such advice because my family and I have some experience in this area, and had at the time already withdrawn on our own for about six weeks. I will add commentary in italics based on the experiences of the last year. I was fortunate and got to shelter with most of my family, in a place where we could enjoy it. This was not entirely by accident. Onward!

Hold On!
"Ask me again why I am the way I am, when the tide is high... and the water's still rising." -- Ghosts of Mars This is not a comprehensive survival guide. How could it be? This is merely intended to be the basic beginning of inspiration towards getting through an emergency. It is meant to give people the opportunity to explore their mindset and maybe find their footing when crisis strikes, as it sometimes does. Five paragraphs in from this one I will offer some of the pragmatics of survival. Before that, a little commentary on the politics of why we end up in an emergency sometimes. Skip ahead, or plow on, you choice, always. Either way, remember that you CAN make it through the bad times with just a little thought and a whole lot of heart.

Logic Alone is Illogical
In some recent political debates in a social media group I used to belong to, many would say that only logic matters, that feelings are irrelevant. My assertion is that such a view is itself illogical and ignores the evidence of reality. To ignore evidence and expect accuracy in theory is inherently illogical, impractical, and untenable. It has been said that to use "logic alone is a great way to go wrong with confidence." (R.A.H.) If you start at the wrong place, logic cannot get you to the right place. Leaving out evidence and data is very much the wrong place to start.

Bureaucracy Gonna Bureaucrat
You are told to stand in line to get the required form, but first get a form from the other line to get permission to stand in line to get the form to get access to other line where you got the permission to get in this line. You have to fill out this form to get permission to fill out the form that you MUST fill out to be clear to fill out the first form. Or you are breaking the law.
