My Big Little Brother
There is something special about the bond between big sisters and little brothers. As a big sister myself, I know it’s something that can’t be matched by anything else in the world. The sound of laughter, as your little brother sits in your lap while clutching the steering wheel, giggling and screaming as he slowly maneuvers the car around the empty parking lot. The smile that creeps onto your face as you hear his gentle snoring, realizing he has fallen asleep in your arms during his favorite Disney movie. The shared feeling of pride as you both stand in front of the bathroom mirror in awe of his handsome appearance for picture day, having secretly combed through his hair with Dad’s styling gel. The rush of excitement as you both sneak a spoonful of raw cookie dough from the bowl while Mom’s not looking. Simply knowing that the two of you will be best friends for your entire lives, is a feeling I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Better Together
The alarm goes off, but I’m still exhausted. In my mind, I tell myself to reach over and push the snooze, but my arms feel too heavy to lift. I sigh heavily, willing myself to sink deeper into my pillows to drown out the relentless and dreadful blaring.

A Glimmer of Hope
The last shark on earth swims through the ocean deep. In the twenty-second century, the ocean is unrecognizable from its former beauty. The colorful coral reefs, once teeming with thousands of marine species, are now deserted and decaying. The ocean’s surface will never gleam a dazzling blue again, now that it is littered with over 600 million tons of plastic, and the sky has become dull and gray. The world’s great oceans, after giving life to infinite marine animals for millennia, are now filthy and dying.

Don't Ask Questions
The first rule when working as an assassin for a top-secret international agency: Don’t ask questions. In the last twelve years, I’ve traveled all over the world and done some pretty insane things. Hurling knives through limbs, dangling out of helicopters, and firing automatic rifles from the roofs of thirty-story buildings are all just parts of the gig. I’ve broken 29 bones and been shot 6 times, all before the age of thirty. Having been roped into the job as a young sixteen-year-old girl, it’s been deeply ingrained into my being to follow orders without even a spark of curiosity. It doesn’t matter who I’ve been assigned to terminate, as long as I succeed the mission…and get paid.

The Chocolate Cake Savior
I love routine. Wake up at six every morning, jog three miles, shower and get ready for school. I can’t remember the last time I started a day differently, or went to school without first stopping at Maggy’s Coffee House for my usual cold brew and blueberry bagel.
