The new student, James, sat at his square, wooden desk and wrote his name on a name tag taped to the top left corner. All students were instructed to do so and to be sure to have made it unique.
A Hidden Companion
Being an octopus, I have never been afraid of sharks. They keep their distance from me, which is a shame because all I have ever wanted to do is be like a shark – intimidating, like a torpedo through the water, moving with such an undeniable confidence. Me, the most redeeming qualities I have; a sniper-like ink squirt, I can blend in anywhere, and apparently, I am pretty smart. These measly traits, though, do not give me a lot of pull. Not in the new ecosystem.
A Lifelong Gift
When gifts are rare and unexpected, they are at their most powerful. However, when they become too frequent and predictable, they lose their true meaning.
I do n0t mind dirt…at least the smell of it. It’s the scent that wakes me up in the morning and it’s starting to grow on me. Laying there, I breathe it in, feeling my skin stretch against my ribs which reminds me of how hungry we all are, day after day. But, today, I’m not that hungry…maybe I’m used to it.
I open my eyes to pure darkness. I close and reopen them to only find the same thing. Am I blind? Maybe I’m dreaming. As I move to rub my eyes, I feel a restraint around my right wrist, keeping me from moving very much.
