Is Natalia Barnett 19 or a 31-year-old Scam Artist?
When I think of a cold case in terms of what I normally see on TV, my mind jumps to unsolved murder. However, cold cases don’t have to involve killer intent, and are often more fascinating when they don’t. A cold case can also be a simple detail about the case that remains unidentified. In Natalia Grace Barnett’s case, it is this simple detail that is contingent on the determination of many factors for her and other individuals. For over a decade, people have been questioning Natalia’s age, but no one really knows the true answer. Knowing for certain would determine whether her adopted parents should be placed under arrest for when they abandoned her, and whether she can be re-adopted now.

Snowy Mountain Solitude
The air felt fresher than it did in Michigan, taking that initial step out of the Colorado airport. My husband and I were kind of blindsided by the nuance of feeling different, not knowing that later it wouldn’t be such a good thing and we’d be sick from the change in altitude. It wasn’t the vacation we intended on taking, but it was the one that we didn’t know we needed. We were planning to stay in Cancun, Mexico but thanks to the company setting up our reservations it didn’t all necessarily work out despite speaking to the CEO whom I refer to as, “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater”. He didn’t like it when I called him that, but at that point he’d already ruined our hotel stay. Call it serendipity, but it would be that night that an article bounced across my phone, claiming a successful mass shooting in the hotel he failed to book us.

A Pharmaceutical Nightmare
In an hour, minutes would have passed in her mind. It confused her that everything was normal, but she was being stared at in fright. She lay there weak, weary from the hours passed, no memory, mind blank. The apathy she felt for the first time all day cleansed her heavy soul because her body could bear the burning anger no longer. As the exhaustion only further set in, she came to understand the fright in her family’s eyes as she discovered the altered environment. The scattered furniture and mysterious bruises on her skin were evidence that this was the bed she made, and guilt would soon transpire.

Pop Culture has Shaped our Treatment of People with Autism
Pop culture has given us false ideas about what autism is, and it is harmful because it affects the way we deal with and understand the disorder. You can have your glorified feelings about what autism is, but you would truly feel sorry, and at times, impatient if you cared for a victim of ASD firsthand. People need to get it out of their heads that all forms of autism grant you savant syndrome like it seems to in the movies. It is not simply an understated quirk. The raw truth of the matter is that it can be a devastating disorder that causes the affected individual to have a hard time relating to the people around them, damaging their relationships. With social support, these neurodivergent types can develop tools to assess situations and respond in ways that allow them to live a positive life and keep their relationships healthy. However, being able to do that relies on your support in understanding their real disorder rather than gobbling up recycled TV tropes like Sunday dinner.

Dear Baby Boy, We Thought you were a Girl
Dear baby boy, We had a gender reveal and found out you were going to be a girl, so daddy and I thought we were having a daughter for a couple months. We were so sure of it that we chose a name, and had a registry piled high with pink clothing. After all, the blood test was supposed to be 98% accurate. When I was 21 weeks pregnant, the ultrasound tech explained to us that she saw a penis in your pictures. I cried when I found out, but I was never disappointed in you. In fact, many of the emotions I was feeling weren't bad at all. Sometimes, I just cry when I’m confused. I was excited that I was having a boy, but also somehow sad and guilty. I was happy to know that I would be the mom of a boy, but I felt like I lost the daughter that was never even actually there. You see, I dreamed up a lot of experiences that were unique to a daughter during that long duration that we thought you were a girl. It would have never been that way if I knew you were a boy all along. In fact, I actually hoped that you were a boy at the gender reveal. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I think I formed someone in my mind, and then I was told that you weren’t that at all. I’m just glad that you are not only healthy, but thriving. I love you no matter what.

Did Anyone Actually Read Lawrence's Wage Gap Article?
Jennifer Lawrence covered her mouth, shocked, hearing her name being called for an Oscar nomination. She then clumsily struggled up the steep stairs in her long, enveloping dress, tripping, and falling briefly. “I wished a random person happy birthday, and then, like, stumbled off. It was mortifying.” she provided in post, speaking in an interview (“Jennifer Lawrence on Falling” 00:01:40 - 00:01:48). Many are drawn to Jennifer Lawrence for being so human in comparison to other, more perfect in appearance, celebrities. Lawrence’s humility involves spouting inappropriate, yet truthful comments. For example, when asked what the process was like that day, coming to the Oscars, she could only come up with chaotic details, reluctantly confiding in the interviewer, “Sorry I had a shot before I came” (“Jennifer Lawrence talks” 00:00:50 - 00:00:55). The only information she provided about herself is unflattering. Having no partiality towards herself, Lawrence is perceived as honest.

Childhood Obesity; Is It Our Diets?
Walking into the supermarket, it’s normal to see a kids’ show character endorsing an unhealthy meal to kids that are too young to understand marketing of this nature. It’s also normal in our society for school districts to serve fattening meals in an environment that is supposed to keep our kids safe. Childhood obesity is a national disease that many think can be solved with a better diet and exercise, but socioeconomic factors in a child’s environment might be preventing healthier alternatives in the first place, “The situation is predicted to worsen; rising childhood obesity rates forewarn of worsening statistics. While it is agreed that both individual factors such as genetic susceptibility and behavior are important in life-long weight gain, evidence is ill-defined with respect to the nature of the environmental influences that impact obesity” (Levine, 2011, para. 2). Some of the socioeconomic factors that cause childhood obesity include a low-quality built environment, and the individual financial situation of the family. A low-quality built environment is an example of a macrosystem that affects childhood obesity, while the financial situation of a family is a less broad microsystem, affecting childhood obesity rates just as much.

PETA is Against the Conservation of Animals
PETA is Against the Conservation of Animals Humans can be selfless, but it is undoubtedly a learned trait. In the Neolithic era, we were born selfish for our own survival because not everyone had a chance. With the comfort of modern society, people can afford to care for themselves and others. Today, humans have evolved to a point where they can deny their natural instincts for the sake of society, ethics, and sometimes causes. For example, PETA is an animal rights activism group that claims to care more about animals than themselves,“People couldn’t believe we were defending chickens”, recalled Ingrid Newkirk, the founder of PETA, in the documentary, “I Am An Animal” (00:07:00). PETA is a seemingly prime example of people working against their primal nature, but it turns out that PETA’s campaign for animals might actually be self-motivated, rather than ethical.
