Coming home
Thirteen year old Jessie didn’t look back as they drove away from her house of seven years. Living with her abusive stepfather, it had never felt like a home, and now that she was leaving all she felt was relief. This time he’d gone too far. Her mother was in a coma in the local hospital and it wasn’t known if she would wake up. She didn’t care what happened to him but her heart squeezed when she thought of her mother and a single tear rolled down her face; but hadn’t she allowed that man into their lives? She was supposed to protect her child and she allowed everything to happen. The bitterness and blame was too strong and she couldn’t forgive her mother for exposing her to that evil man and everything she had endured in the last seven years.

Foster Family
Thirteen year old Jessie didn’t look back as they drove away from the house where she had lived for the past seven years. Living with her abusive stepfather, it had never felt like a home, and now that she was leaving all she felt was relief. This time he’d gone too far. Her mother was in a coma in the local hospital and it wasn’t known if she would wake up. For now, he was being charged with attempted manslaughter but that could change depending on the outcome. She didn’t care what happened to him. Her heart squeezed when she thought of her mother and a single tear rolled down her face; but hadn’t she allowed that man into their lives? She had invited him in and allowed him to behave the way he did. She was supposed to protect her child and she allowed it to happen. The bitterness and blame was too strong and, as sad as it made her, she couldn’t forgive her mother for exposing her to that evil man and everything she had endured in the last seven years.

When the worst happens
Anna wasn’t pretty in the conventional sense but there was something about the warmth and depth of her green blue eyes, and the smile that lit up her face, that drew people to her. She had a kind and compassionate nature that meant people found her easy to open-up to. On any public transport, she would inevitably be engaged by those sitting next to her and end up hearing all their tales of woe as she had a talent for empathetic listening. This wasn’t entirely within her comfort zone as she was naturally quiet and preferred her own company or that of her small, tight knit circle of friends. There was a vulnerability about her, likely emphasised by her shy nature, that meant men tended to want to protect her. They saw her kindness as weakness and worried that she would be easily taken advantage of. Those who knew her well, understood that she was not in need of protection. She was strong-willed and stubborn and she was resolute in her drive to fight injustice. Give her a cause to fight for and she was unstoppable.

Granny's Tattie Soup
I remember being 7 years old and hiding under the rain cover of the hammock in my granny’s garden with my book. I stared blankly at the pages, too upset by my great granny’s nasty words to take anything in. A disembodied head with a kind smile, gentle blue eyes, and cat-like glasses, appeared under the cover.
