Actually, Vegans Don't Lecture People Enough
‘How do you know if someone’s vegan? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you,’ the trite saying goes. The reality is that for most vegans, most of the time, people find out we’re vegan when asking why we’ve declined an offer of food or overhearing us ask a waiter what the vegan options are, not because we’ve brought up the subject. Far from being subject to harassment or unfair scrutiny, the people who make such ‘jokes’ are getting off lightly.

What's Really Extreme?
You know you’re running up against powerfully ingrained norms when a simple sticker gets your movement labelled as extreme. Usually when we hear about extremism, we think of people who use violence to further their aims. When you’re vegan, all it takes is a sticker.

The Ancient Coin Scam
I always like to do my research on common scams in places I’m visiting and yet, somehow, I avoided finding out about the ancient coin scam that is not too uncommon around ancient sites in Turkey. I had worried that Turkey was going to be a tough destination in terms of pushy sales people and scam artists but had found I felt far less hassled than I did back when I was studying in Paris. Sure, there were plenty of people trying to get you to buy their wares but saying a simple no and wandering off had always ended things. While I still feel this way about Turkey in general, I formed this opinion before we visited Ephesus.

Why Our Kids Should Be Learning Te Reo
If you’re anything like me, you learned a little reo Māori at primary school; basic things like greetings, days of the week, months of the year, and colours. Yet, because you never used these terms, you only remember some of the greetings and the first few colours mentioned in the song ‘Ma is White.’ You’ve also picked up a smattering of other terms that are commonly used such as aroha, mana, whānau, iwi, taonga.
