How Do I Get My Child Into Reading?
How Do I Get My Child Into Reading? The recent changes to GCSE English Language and Literature require a very high level of reading ability. Not only is it important to be able to read very lengthy and detailed passages but they also demand a wide vocabulary and an ability to write creatively. This underlines, more than ever, the importance of reading. To put it simply, you cannot expect to answer comprehensions or write your own creative writing pieces if you do not have experience of reading a wide variety of texts. If you want to achieve the higher grades, then reading is the key to unlock potential in creative writing and language analysis.

What Is ADHD?
What is ADHD? This month our article focuses on an issue that is quite a contentious subject. ADHD also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There is a lot of debate about the condition, as it is not yet fully understood. Some people might take the view somewhat erroneously, that it is merely an excuse for bad behaviour. However, having taught for over 25 years, I do believe that it is something that we need to consider seriously, as it can prove to be a significant barrier for some children’s learning. Understanding the condition can lead to a range of effective strategies to ensure that appropriate progress is made.

What Is Asperger's?
I am writing this not only from an educator’s perspective, but also as the mother of a son with Asperger’s. In a way, autism has become my specialist subject. I have not only read widely on the condition, but I have experienced firsthand the challenges and the rewards of living with someone with Asperger’s. I have decided to write this article as recently a minor celebrity appeared on the This Morning television programme with her child, whom she suspected of having Asperger’s syndrome. During the conversation and in front of her child, she referred to him as "odd." I found this horrifying. As challenging as Asperger’s can be, I have never seen it as something negative. I am writing this, therefore, to educate more people about the condition. If Asperger’s individuals are taught in the correct educational environment, then they can become very happy and successful.
