Donnie, Not Donnie
Chapter One Curtain Close at the Old Barn The welcome sign isn’t much to look at, as far as township welcome signs are concerned; then again, neither is the town. It had brick red painted wood slats, bold white etched block letters, and the proud reminder that Fielding, UT has been a survivor since 1892. Most folks around here could easily tell you exactly when their familial line landed here; who married who, who tried to leave and came back and why, every milestone, every tragedy, every affair, and every bit of nothing in between, can all be recited by anyone holding a cold drink or a hot cup of tea. That’s how it works for all 400 or so Fieldingers, all of them, that is, except me.

There are secret places in the world; hidden but to the dreamers. I have a practical plan for my life; one with a modest sized house with plenty of yard, built on a solid foundation in a neighborhood that never really loses market value just outside of town. What I’m about to conjour though... has no rooting in reality. It has nothing to do with practicalities or markets, accessibilities or budgets. This is myself in my wildest dreams.

I have always been a sucker for a wink and a smile... add to them THE three magic words, and I quite quickly become a hopeless cause. Her name was Lily, and I was 19. “If I knew then what I know now” is what every coffee sipping old timer that sits at my counter says, daily. After tonight though, I doubt I’ll ever reach a stage of grey that gives me the right to quote it. You see, Lily dared me. Those three damned magical words... “I dare you,” winking and smiling. So potently powerful, they make me, for all of the un-apologies of the word, incorrigible!
