Pairing
When the neighbor scream-laughed, the wall shook and Alice reached to steady it. After a year of isolation—a purist’s sequestering: no sneaking out to the dentist or hair salon—she couldn’t remember the last time she’d laughed. The friends she’d once known had morphed into their social media avatars. Groceries and aspirational purchases—free weights, red lipstick, a straw hat ringed by a long yellow ribbon—materialized on her threshold as though teleported. She worked in bed all day in pajamas, sending and receiving emails about inbound marketing and voice search tactics.

The Last Man On Earth
The Last Man On Earth “We gotta do it,” Ron is saying. We’re at the beach, sitting on sand, staring at water. How long did it take us to get here? We’ve been wandering endlessly, looking for life. Neither of us knows which ocean this is, if it’s even an ocean at all. A lifeguard chair towers over us; my imagination draws a lifeguard into it. Zinc on nose. Whistle around neck. “Today. Tonight. Waiting isn’t smart.”

Or had socializing always been as performative as she recalled?

If "127 Hours" Moved You
After watching 127 Hours, the true story of canyoneer Aron Ralston, I stayed up half the night rapelling into the Google abyss. I had fallen in love with Ralston, who got trapped under a boulder in the wilds of Utah and then escaped by amputating his own arm with a pocket knife. Or perhaps I loved James Franco, who plays him in the movie. It was 2010. The world didn’t yet know about Franco’s affinity for teenage girls, Ralston’s alleged assaulting of his partner. Both men were unproblematic heartthrobs.
