The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Isolated in the deep forest, there was no one to see the candlelight, or wonder at its meaning. But in the village, beyond the wood’s leafless branches, three figures woke in three separate houses. Each of them felt the candle come to life at the cabin, and each of them felt cold fear burn within them.

Deren's Road
Willowdell Stables rested at the bottom of a great swell of golden land, in a sheltered vale spotted generously with oak and willow. A gentle stream flowed from the northern slopes, winding lazily through the tree-shaded pastures. Over a dozen horses and several long-horned cows grazed contentedly in the morning sun.

Deren's Road
The Golden Sea was aptly named. Covered in gentle hills and long yellow grass that rolled like waves in the wind, the southern Andesian province did resemble a golden body of water. Governed by Lady Haaran Braed, Duchess of the Bastion, it was a lawful province, respected in the kingdom by nobles and merchants alike. Each autumn, the duchess would host a grand market outside the walls of Braeden’s Bastion. For three weeks, the town of Hazel overflowed with crowds. Merchants, farmers, and artisans arrived in covered wagons from across the northern kingdoms, eager to trade gossip and wares.

The Frozen Empire
There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Those who lived in the Sunmarch thought they went extinct centuries ago, when the Snowfall covered the Empire. Others, more formally educated, believed the dragons abandoned their nesting grounds as the Meerandalese armies tried to expand beyond the enchanted winter. Either way, the Empire failed to outrun the curse and the dragons, like so many other creatures, disappeared. One more loss among many as the Snowfall ruthlessly blanketed each conquered nation brought under the Empire's mantle.

An Unexpected Discovery
When I first moved to Kingston and met Trevor, he was a dream come true. He was attractive and had smiling, blue eyes and a charming, crooked grin. But most importantly, out of all the girls around me at the time, his eyes were only on me. It was a story of the fairytale prince falling in love with the inconsequential peasant girl. And with that romantic ideal guiding me, I was both blinded and smitten.
