The Message
I stare at the peeling paint on the ceiling within the outline of a faint water stain. The apartment I live in is mediocre. That’s the best word for it. Nothing is nice, though nothing is broken, either. I don’t mind it, but it did take some getting used to. I used to live in a fancy high-end building. I was a laboratory technician. The position paid well and I had no one but myself and my cat to take care of. Then, I was diagnosed with a rare condition about a year ago, at age twenty-five. That’s when everything changed.

The Fighter Pilot's Journal
No one particularly likes going in for treatment. There is something about giving one’s body over to the medical technicians that feels wrong. I know they are helping us, but it’s somewhat like leaving home. I feel safe in this body. The program they hook us up to is like a vacation, I suppose, but what if you’re happy where you are? What if you like being home?

The Watchman's Journal
Day One This is my first day standing guard at the northeastern watch tower. I am not alone, thankfully, as Alfred is here with me. He has been with the watch for many seasons. He speaks often of the snow and how to stay warm, though he has yet to share tips on how to stay cool in this wretched heat. We are under strict orders to wear our uniforms at all times and I feel as if this metal helmet is slowly roasting me.
