The Matchsticks
I reside in a city, cities are often called ‘concrete jungles’. These two words are one of the most accurate representations of humankind’s need to advance, to invent, to innovate. We deplete what we find around us and then try to replicate it using technology. We are in a sense invaders, seeking to disturb the equilibrium found in nature to further advance. We were surrounded by wood and so we built industries utilizing it, conveniently forgetting that it was a finite resource, and then realization struck, depletion of this ‘resource’ had negative side-effects but the damage was already too far spread and the reversal has to be quick, there can be no ‘baby-steps’. According to Greenpeace, 80% of our forests have been destroyed or damaged beyond repair. Something that used to surround us has been isolated, driven to, for lack of a better term, extinction. At the rate at which forests are disappearing, the only way for the future generation to ever experience it would be through Virtual Reality headsets. To experience what we have before it’s gone I decided to head down to Cooks Forest, Pennsylvania. Cooks Forest is known for its variety of evergreen trees and hence it has also acquired the name, Black Forest, due to the sun never reaching the forest floor due to these trees.

The Flow Of Truth
I’ve never been the best writer, instead I use pictures and videos to try and communicate a moment or experience that sometimes looks simple on the surface but has a deeper meaning below. I performed a slight edit to this picture on my iPhone by increasing the contrast and slightly shifting the blues towards teal for that icy crystallized blue to really pop out.

Crystal Wave
Before this competition, I don’t recall the last time I had written an article. I’m not a writer, but I do share my art through the result of what my camera produces! Pictures do supposedly say a 1000 words, right? I intentionally did not edit this picture at all, because I wanted to share the same natural, magical, and raw experience I witnessed with those who would come across it. Filters and edits may definitely enhance this picture, but if I had to add those edits- it would have been from a perspective of what I thought was best, and that is not the intention behind this captured picture.

Walking on Ice
Today’s reality is tomorrow’s memory. Our planet holds such great beauty, which it generously displays for us to indulge in. This picture is that of a pristine ice cave deep in the heart of Vatnajökull, Iceland. The picture has been edited by increasing the contrast and slightly shifting the tone curve. In addition to that, I also shifted the blues towards teal and had a local adjustment in the sky to bring up the saturation and down the exposure for the sunset to really pop out. The intention behind the edit was to highlight the crystal blues from the magical glacier in the image which we don’t see every day, but also focus on the sunset which is so familiar to us.

Stuck In Concrete
As quarantine and isolation keeps us contained within our walls, I’m witnessing a whole new world form just a few feet away from me. Sitting by my window, I’m unsure if it’s a different lens or perspective I’ve formed, or the fact that nature is truly showcasing its honest beauty.
