Vocal-Do I Stay or Do I go?
Perhaps challenges that pay the top three winners is why I stay? I’ve participated in many challenges on Medium.com and enjoyed them very much. For the most part, Medium challenges don’t pay. Vocal challenges, however, generally offer cash awards to the top three stories. I’ve yet to win-but like the lotto-if you don’t play, it doesn’t pay.

Barnaby, The One-Eyed Barn Owl
I was excited to start this new adventure as head of the education department at a renowned zoo. So what, my office was in a dingy, windowless basement of the museum. The CEOs words echoed in my head, as he unlocked the office door and switched on the light, “Oh good. They cleaned.”

My Adventurous Mr. Wallaby
I was working at a zoo when a rusted out burgundy sedan pulled up to the back gate just as we were opening. The beat-up sedan took off, screeching its tires as it peeled away.

Forest McGee and The Magnificent Thing
Prologue I was in the parking lot of a brand new, gleaming yellow, Dollar General. This store was carved out of the edge of a thick forest. I looked up at the looming storm clouds. I saw the most magnificent thing! An American Bald Eagle playing in a thermal wave. The brand new black rooftop of the Dollar General created a column of warmed air. Birds of Prey love to float in these thermal columns. I tried to capture a photo of this beautiful bird with my camera phone. No success. I leaned against the car and just watched, allowing the magnificence of the moment to sink into my soul.
