Philip and Ian left the Headman’s with extra biscuits and sausages for the Lumbermen. Ian now wore the longsword over his back as well as a long dagger and a small hatchet. Philip had a pack with stewpot, food and some salt. Mahrielin had packed a pouch of brandy-soaked bandages, a needle and strong thread and some midwife herbs. Philip carried his bow with arrows packed to move silently. They felt confident and well equipped as they approached the Smithy where they would meet the Wood Brothers and Han. They could already hear the occasional ring of Jacob’s Smith hammer.

Philip was awake before the roosters. He had to pee in the dark and he picked his way through his cabin but took time to throw a bit of wood on the embers of his kitchen fire. There was a little fog outside but there was a slight glow on the horizon. A few birds were calling already. He finished his business and collected eggs. He knew the yard well enough. As soon as the chickens were disturbed the roosters began with the racket. He retired to the kitchen and built up the fire and put a pot of water on to boil the eggs.

Philip and Ian spent the evening pleasantly trading stories with the lumbermen. They did not drink too much. Philip was miserly and Ian wisely avoided a hard morning that would involve the Headman. The highlight of the evening was Ian’s success at the dice. One of the men, Jan Wood, lost an entire silver to Ian. He was offered it back if some of the men would help safely explore the woods for signs of Dragons.

Lord Markand drank his tea and wondered when and how he began to endure Scribe Daniels. Every morning the business of the district was marked by this peevish man. Markand questioned his thought that it was only because of Alan. Brigg Markand was a learned man of the people and he knew that he could endure the scribe. Unlike his father, he was capable enough to have a choice though. Damned if the man purposely made errors just to test him. He had to admit that this was better than training a new scribe, even if he had to read after the man.

There weren't always dragons in the Valley. Grandfather Todd told stories of a time when there were three large villages in the Valley. The old man would sit and mumble to children for hours. He claimed that in those days so many people would come to Festival that you could walk for two hours and still not see the end of the thousand camps. That was before the war with the plains people, Grandfather would tell the stories of the war as well but he had never seen a dragon. He almost never told stories about the plagues which came after the war.
