Broken Foot, Whole Heart
This all started with a broken foot. More precisely, this all started with a mishap involving a curb and a lower-than-expected piece of pavement . . . and ended with a torn ligament, an avulsion fracture, and a sprain of just about everything else in my left foot. (So much for fire drills being a safety precaution.) It was late April 2017, and I didn’t need medical training to know that biking, hiking, swimming, and just about everything but sitting on the couch would be out of the question for much of the upcoming summer.

Novice
In my defense, it was my first time in Vegas. It was probably the heady atmosphere of bright lights, expensive perfumes, and crackling anticipation that made me accept when a casino employee invited me to take the last chair in a card game. But by the time I was holding a handful of cards, eyeing a pile of colored plastic discs in front of me, and realizing we were not playing Slapjack, it was too late to extricate myself.

Not a Believer, But . . .
For most of my life, I've thought of astrology as an overly complicated system of mumbo-jumbo for people who had so little confidence in themselves that they wanted some mysterious cosmic force to dictate everything from their everyday decisions to their ultimate destinies. But because people asked about my zodiac sign from time to time, I looked it up and learned that my mid-July birthday puts me squarely in the Cancer sign.
