Miracle
Mira was her name. A gift from God. A gift I promised would not go to waste. I had adopted her from an orphanage. Her parents had gone missing and with no family besides them to go to, she ended up there. We lived in a small cabin in the woods. The closest thing to a neighbor was an older gentleman about a mile away. We had met in town some time ago and realized based on talk of similar landmarks that we were in fact living in the same woods. He talked about how he enjoyed fishing on the lake and even invited me to join him sometime.

The Final Hunt
The metal door creaked open, and I was exposed to a cold winter air. Outside lay a fresh new coat of snow on the ground. The sun had just set behind the mountains. Taking my first step into the outside my foot fell deep into the snow. I would have to trudge my way to my destination today. As I stood their admiring the purple and red sky of the setting sun there was a sense of peace around me. I then noticed the comet still hanging proudly in the sky. It seemed like it was only yesterday that it had arrived. But it has been several months now. Maybe even a whole year. I’m not sure anymore.

A Day in the Walls
I woke up to the smell of pancakes and my mother yelling my name. “Emmett! Pancakes are ready!” I opened my eyes and slowly my senses started to come to me. Like somebody was flipping a switch. The smell of pancakes filled my nose, and my stomach began to growl. I glanced over at my clock. It read 10:03AM.

Alone With Fear
I pulled hard on my fishing pole against whatever lay beneath the water. My boat rocked back and forth as I struggled with my soon to be prize. Just a little more. Just a little longer. I gave one last yank at my opponent, and he emerged from the water. I might be 97 years old, but I still had it in me. It wasn’t as big as I thought it was, but it was still a good enough size for dinner. I sat down in my boat to catch my breath. The air felt clean today. Fresh like the world had been reset. In these parts of the woods there was a slight gray look to everything. The lack of color you might think would make it look depressing, but it was one of those places on Earth where the opposite was true. It was beautiful. The lack of color was due to the gray clouds which hung in the sky. It was going to rain today; I could feel it. The folks in town had said tonight the comet could be seen but with the way things looked now I wasn’t so sure.

Shadows
We sat like scared children in the alleyway. Our hearts beating. His hand covering my breath. My hands gripping his jacket. His eyes looked wild as I turned my fear paralyzed head to look up at him. We were dead. This was the day we would die. There was no story for us beyond this alleyway.
