She Made the Best Fried Eggs
Morning came with the smell of bacon. The hiss and spit of oil finally waking her up; the birds screaming love songs directly outside her window helped. Ava was still tired. She hadn’t gone to bed late, hadn’t woken up early, but it was hard to keep her eyes open. She wasn’t quite sure she wanted to be awake.

In the Dark
She jolted awake. The feeling of a nightmare clinging to her skin, her mind feeling heavy. The air was stale, like a long unused room. Planting her hands against the cold floor, she pushed herself up, sitting hunched over her knees as she looked around. Her throat was dry and her breaths came quick and sharp as her eyes strained against the dark, but there was no light. There was nothing. When she reached out a tentative hand, there was nothing but the smooth surface beneath her.

Can You Help Me?
‘No’ has always been a hard word. It left your vocabulary years ago, too many people upset by it. Life is made much too difficult by it. ‘No’ left you all those times someone asked to borrow money, even when you knew they wouldn’t pay it back, and that was money you needed. It left you whenever your friends asked for a favour, no matter how much you didn’t want to do it, or how busy you were. They would smother you with compliments, or beg, or turn sour. And so it was much easier to pretend the word ‘no’ never existed. So you do it. It would paint you as the bad guy to say ‘no’. So you shoulder the weight, and agree; with as kind a smile as you can manage. People do this a lot. People take advantage, and you know you should be stronger than that but to let people down feels like a worse alternative to just letting them.
