There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. That was what the stories claimed, but for the boy, the sky of black was all he ever knew. Flakes of white drifted through the air, amassing on the bodies scattered around the ground. How many of them were still alive; the boy didn’t know. They’d been crouching for well over an hour, and in the upper realm, that could be enough.

The Last Remnant
If the last hope of humanity gave up, and no one was alive to see it, would anyone blame him? It was strange of all thoughts, that would be the one flashing through my mind as the bionics crashed through the windows of my laboratory. Circuits melded with flesh and wires weaving up skin like ivy strangling a tree, the lifeless bodies hobbled towards me, but as always, I was ready.

The Weight of my Greatest Achievement
Upon grasping it, the money sent tremors to my body, and for an eternity, I didn’t know whether I’d raise it high or drop it to the ground. On one hand, the freedom and wings attached to the check could lift my far away from this life, but on the other hand, the weight and gravitas of what I now possessed could perhaps plunge me into a pit darker than I’d ever known.
