Culture War Collateral Damage
In recent times there seems to be an almost constant reference to this thing called the “Culture War,” but what is it and why can't you walk away from it. Wikipedia says a culture war is a cultural conflict between social groups and the struggle for dominance of their values, beliefs and practices. There is nothing wrong with that. People since the dawn of man have disagreements on how to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. Like many things the problems don't arise from the strict definitions and theories on a concept but in the practice. At least now taking part in the conflict isn't discussion or debate about the values important to a populace. It takes on the form of war and conflict with attacks levied between tribes with shallow convictions and a lust for dominance. This seemingly is leading to a trend where everything is attacked causing what I think is the collateral damage of entertainment.

Off-Netflix - Personal Favorites
So for the first piece for Off-Netflix (click here to see the initial plan for this series) I just want to share some of my personal favorites. Movies that I couldn't count how many times I've watched over the years since finding them. So there is no real rhyme or reason to these. Just strictly movies that I wanted to share. After this I'll try to theme these lists more so they could be used for a themed movie night.

Off-Netflix Series
Especially with all this time spent in with quarantine I feel it's time to start going through my movie collection. As I mentioned in a previous piece I wrote here on Vocal “Rental Shops Were Better than Streaming,” I have began to notice all the titles that are missing from the streaming wars on the main services. So I will start going through some of my favorite movies that you can't find on a subscription. Many of them you either have to find a physical copy or find on a Video On Demand (VOD) style rental service.

Rental Shops were better than streaming.
Media consumption has changed so many times in my lifetime. I've personally never been very big on theater going. I always seem to get a tall person sitting right in front of me, even in an empty room. I do love stories and generally dislike people, so the ability to take in media within my own space is the best. I remember getting my weekend NES game from the local video rental shop or even the grocery store. That then moved into the more franchised options with Blockbuster and Family Video where I would grab a week's worth of DVDs for less than ten bucks. Now we have streaming services that pour into almost every device you have in your home. In recent years though consuming media just hasn't been as enjoyable as I remember from my younger years. So I would like to talk about the things that the streaming wars are losing me with.

Trash Algorithm or Trash People
So within the last year or so I have been hearing a lot of talk about people being manipulated by algorithms. There are stories about YouTube's algorithm making it harder and harder to see the content you want, or censorship on twitter through machine learning code. These are obviously problems with the reliance of algorithm's to run all these platforms and we should definitely find solutions in the power of tech in our lives. Sometimes though there are some takes on algorithms that rub me the wrong way. Today the thing I want to explore is the idea that social media algorithms peddle outrage and fear. I'm going to stick with Facebook because I've used it more than others and I don't think anyone wants to read about my observations of all algorithm based sites.
