Advice from Ancient Rome
Marcus Aurelius kept a private diary. For roughly 700 years after his reign, no one in history mentions its existence until 906 AD when a book-collecting bishop finds a copy and begins a letter-writing campaign: "I have an old copy of the Emperor Marcus' most profitable book, so old indeed that it is altogether falling to pieces.… This I have had copied and am able to hand down to posterity in its new dress."

Old Barn Road
Dear Maggie Jo, If you're reading this, something went wrong. But also, something went right. No one believed me when I said I wasn’t lying this time. The empty cans we’d tied to the tripwire went flying. I sprang ten feet when I heard the clanging. I’m not lying about that either. Ten feet, maybe twelve, that’s how high I jumped before I took off running, my heart pounding like it was trying to crash its way out and beat me back to Milo’s house.

Everything After
Stratton cannot stand long making a rebuttal. His feet are cold on the pine floor and he needs to get going. The fleece jacket speaks to him again, this time with a toddler’s need for something now. He pulls the fleece from its hanger and shuts the closet with force, letting the others know his decision is final. At the back door, he finds his boots stuffed with green peppers.
