Marigolds In Gloom
Spring came but it wasn’t the same. This spring was hotter than usual. The expected 67 to 72 degrees never happened. Spring started out at 92 degrees and stayed there. “Climate change is real” Reggie thought. “Damn” Reggie said, it’s hotter than Hades out here. “This doesn’t bode well for the vegetable garden” Cheryl offered. Cheryl was Reggie’s partner. They were both semi off the grid types. They had bought and been living on this farm for three years now. So far so good. They had turned a profit each of the first two years. Reggie had even gotten creative and added marijuana plants here and there between the marigold plants strictly for recreational purposes. The crop was split between African marigolds and French marigolds. The African marigolds were the more pungent of the two. “You’re right Reggie said “As goes the garden so goes the farm” “I would say we’ve just run into our first crisis babe, I certainly don’t expect any good to come from all this heat.” “Well the heat should keep some of the critters away, but what about pests?” Cheryl questioned. “Marigolds have some natural pest prevention that’s why I planted some all around the garden. The farm of 5 acres was 11 miles outside of Carlyle, Illinois. It was rural and quiet. Adjacent to the farm bungalow, they had a fairly sized vegetable garden. They grew the marigolds as a cash crop selling the produce to various customers from industry to a local food market. It was a tedious business but they were making a go of it until this heat wave. Marigolds was supposed to be lucrative according to everything they had researched in the organic farming literature. Up until now it had been. But when they looked out over the acres of marigolds all they saw were drooping water starved marigold plants.

THE MYSTERY OF HAIR
Hair, the ubiquitous appendage of all humans. It comes in many shapes and textures. It runs the gamut from jet black to raspberry red. Its’ texture varies from silky blonde to soft woolen nap. The fact that it's care and styling is an industry of over $93 billion dollars worldwide and $20 billion in the United States speaks to it importance in the lives of humans. Have you considered that your hair may be more than just something to make you look good? This can be summed up quite nicely in the Biblical aphorism” Hair is a women's glory". Men are included in that pithy saying as well and always have been. Just think of the haircuts, mustache and beard oils, creams and pomades men have used over the centuries but are just now more noticeable.

Libra The Scales
I am a Libra on the cusp of Scorpio. Star date: Oct 22nd. I like balance, harmony, no drama, and beauty. I am sensitive and intuitive. I dislike one on one conflict. On the cusp of Scorpio means I am supposed to like sex, but then again who doesn't. I thought most of the people I admired were Libra's too. I was mistaken. I admire people throughout the zodiacal spectrum. The exact dates and times of the various signs according to the best astrologers are approximations. Approximations with what amount of error you ask? Is it a little bitty error? Like the one that caused the spaceship The Challenger to crash. Or was it a huge error like the one that caused the sinking and multiple deaths on the infamous Titanic. To the scientific minded this kind of “approximation” puts the kibosh on astrology as a science. That being said zodiacal star lore has been present in every culture right up to the present day including the watered down nondescript astrological readings in many newspapers and magazines. A friend of mine's father worked for a newspaper writing the astrological section. He essentially made up the forecasts and switched them around periodically. I believe astrology started out with a foundation based in reality. As the zodiac is a part of the reality of nature. I am a strong proponent that all of nature provides instructing signs for discerning observers. The zodiac this instruction maybe more than others. It stands to reason that time and place have an effect on the human being when we look at it logically. A person born in Hoboken, New Jersey will have a profoundly different outlook, personality, and psyche than a person born in let's say Balkhash, Karaganda Region in Kazakhstan.

Serendipity
Azam Ali’s melodic Persian voice stirred Hakeem back to life. He eyes remained closed as he silenced the alarm and let life flood back to his body. Thrusting himself out of bed, he was determined not to be beaten by quarantine. Staring out of the window as he brushed his teeth, the audaciously green palm trees called to him. A perfect morning. He could get used to winter in California. He stopped at his regular coffee haunt on Burbank before proceeding to the park. At 7am, it was sparse. Still, he ventured further in. Taking a solitary bench, he sipped his coffee, closing his eyes to savor the serenity of the chocolate notes.
