Forehindsight
I see you, future self, with your eyes fixed on this moment. My moment. Analyzing the choice I am making to step left instead of right. My left hand points me this way with its pencil. A past voice rings in my ears: this is what we’ve always wanted. We’ve been led astray by logic and security. We’ve been on a jet black road for far too long. I want dirt and gravel. Bumps and grit. I want the entirety of this risk in my hands, gripped.

Starry Night: A Critique
A testament to surrealism, The Starry Night holds perfect colors and staccato brush strokes distinctive to its creator. Each star's light reverberates against the blue. But, Starry Night, or Windy Eve? The work's title lacks credit to the iconic feature of the piece: its fluid, swirling sky. Nevertheless, a masterpiece.

My father built houses, but never for black people. It started as a roofing and siding business. It was hard, big work in a soft, small town. My two brothers and I always had what we needed, and we knew better than to want more. The only thing I wanted was to stop hearing the n-word at dinner.

I can only hope they experience the same sense of peace I feel when watching, wondering whether they sense the passage of time at all.
