The Face Beneath the Painting
A forgotten painting. A hidden face. A secret that should never have been discovered.

When Elena saw the face for the first time, she thought it was a flaw in the canvas.
It was a November morning, and the museum was still empty. The vast rooms smelled of wood, dust, and varnish—the particular scent she had learned to love over the years.
Elena was a restorer, and for three weeks she had been working on an anonymous eighteenth-century painting recently acquired by the museum at an auction.
The painting depicted a woman dressed in red, sitting beside a window.
Nothing extraordinary.
At least, that was what it seemed.
Elena moved her lamp closer to the canvas and examined a small area of the painting. Dark marks had appeared beneath the surface.
She picked up her scalpel.
With extreme care, she removed a very thin layer of paint.
Then she stopped.
Beneath the woman's face was another face.
A man.
His eyes were wide open, staring directly at her.
Elena stepped away from the painting.
“Impossible.”
She called the museum director.
When he arrived, he studied the canvas in silence.
“It could be a change made by the artist,” he finally said. “A pentimento.”
Elena nodded, but she wasn't convinced.
That night, she returned to the museum.
She didn't even know why.
Perhaps she simply wanted to examine the painting one last time.
She turned on the lights and approached the canvas.
The face was still there.
This time, however, Elena noticed something she hadn't seen before.
At the edge of the canvas, hidden beneath the frame, there was a small inscription.
She photographed it.
“Don't let him look outside.”
Elena felt a shiver run down her spine.
She continued removing the paint.
The face became clearer and clearer.
Then she noticed the clothes.
They didn't belong to the eighteenth century.
They were modern.
A dark jacket.
A white shirt.
A watch on his wrist.
Elena stared into the man's eyes.
And suddenly, she understood.
That face had not been painted centuries ago.
It had been added much more recently.
She went home without sleeping.
The following morning, she found the director waiting for her outside the gallery.
“Elena, we need to talk.”
He placed an old photograph on the table.
It had been taken in front of the painting.
A black-and-white photograph dated 1958.
A young man stood in the picture.
He was wearing a dark jacket, a white shirt, and a watch on his wrist.
He was identical to the man hidden beneath the painting.
Elena stood completely still.
“Who is he?”
The director didn't answer immediately.
Then he said:
“The previous owner of the painting.”
Elena looked at the photograph again.
“And when did he die?”
The director lowered his eyes.
“1958.”
That evening, Elena returned to the gallery to destroy the photograph.
But when she turned on the lights, the painting had changed.
The woman in red was no longer sitting beside the window.
She was standing.
And she was looking directly at the man hidden beneath the paint.
Elena slowly stepped closer.
Then she saw something that made her blood run cold.
Beneath the man's face, a second inscription had appeared.
It was barely visible.
Four words.
“Now yours is missing.”
